Street Jams is a great series EXCEPT for the fact that it doesn't use all the 12" versions. 80s rap was just as heavily influenced by the 12" single as other genres of music. Track times on this volume are:
1. Skanless (4:27) 2. rapper's delight (14:25) 3. the breaks (6:29) 4. sucker DJs (3:27) 5. request line (4:47) 6. what people do for money (4:02) 7. adventures of super rhyme (10:55) 8. king of the beat (3:09) 9. the message (6:33) 10. friends (4:06) 11. one for the treble (6:30) 12. the pure (3:10)

I bought this album in 1995, when I was a senior in high school. Up until that time, my exposure to music made before 1985 was limited to my parents' classic rock. This album blew me away, and opened the floodgates to a whole new world of music to me.
At the time this came out, the hip-hop pioneers were sort of forgotten; the 'old-school' revolution in underground hip-hop hadn't yet occurred. In my point of view, the Rhino compilations had a big impact in ensuring the founders of hip-hop weren't lost. Much thanks to the folks at Rhino for putting this together. As to the music, if you're a fan of hip-hop, it's really imperative you know 'Rapper's Delight,' 'The Breaks,' and 'The Message.' There are also couple of obscure tracks that are really interesting to hear. The album cost is worth the education.

This what Rap is all about. Songs that actually make a difference in the world, performed by rappers who actually have talent. Don't we all wish "hip hop" artists of today possessed half the talent these OG's do? I'm hoping DJ Run's new CD that hits stores in October will inject some life into today's rap scene. It's bound to be light years ahead of the crap most young bucks are trying to pass off as mic skills today. This may be the perfect compilation to get in touch with rap's roots. I just wish they would have included It's Like That on it...then it would have been flawless. Man, how I miss Jay!
