Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

But for the title, a glance through this book's wide-ranging recipes would never give away that they're kosher. Kosher cooks new to the kitchen—as well as those new to keeping kosher—who want more than the standard Jewish fare will cheer at seeing the array of classy alternatives: pumpkin bisque instead of chicken soup; arepas rather than latkes; Mexican hot chocolate brownies, not halvah. And they can make everything with the confidence that it will adhere to dietary laws: Fein provides a comprehensive yet readable explanation of their principles, and all the dishes are composed to ensure they pass. Bravo! I tried 3 recipes at different times: Couscous with Dried Cranberries and Toasted Almonds, Tomato Salad with Toasted Bread and Feta Cheese, and Meatballs in Marinara Sauce. This book actually tempted me to go into the kitchen and try them. Not a place I generally like to be but it was quick and better still it not only worked but I receive received raves from my grandchildren. I am now going to work my way through the fish chapter for my husband and myself.
Thank you Ronnie Fein

This book is a winner. The recipes are simple, modern, and focused on fresh fruits, vegetables, healthy entrees. It arrived on Wednesday and by the following Sunday, I had experimented with six different recipes ranging from terrific side dishes to salmon to dessert. All were winners and I'll make them all again. This cookbook IS hip and you don't have to be kosher to enjoy it.

I love Ronnie Fein's new book! I cook traditional kosher meals, but worry about the high fat and salt content. The recipes in this book show me how I can maintain a kosher home and still provide healthy, modern, "gourmet" meals for my family. I have tried only a few of the recipes so far (e.g. soups, salmon recipes), but plan to cook my way through the entire book.

I have used Ms. Fein's book, "Complete Idiots Guide to Cooking" since I graduated from college! A friend just got this new Kosher cookbook and although I am not Jewish, it had a bunch of recipes that I wanted to try. Much like Ms. Fein did in The Complete Idiots Guide, she gives us lots of easy-to-execute recipes. In Hip Kosher she presents jazzed-up, "current" recipes for everyday favorites like brownies: I made the Mexican Hot Chocolate Brownies and they were fabulous!

I am always looking for something new to do with chicken [....] and her Stir-Fried Couscous with Chicken, Dried Apricots and Pistachios was a hit with my husband and our seven-year old son.

If you enjoy cooking and like to make foods that feel special enough for entertaining, but aren't too complicated for weekday family meals- you will love this book!

I was amazed at how many ways Ms. Fein has figured out how to make kosher food fun! The cover caught my eye, I wasn't even looking for a new cookbook. But boy am I glad I stopped and picked it up.
I don't know where to begin, all the recipes look so fabulous!
Love the creativity and the user friendly design of the book.
Thanks so much!!

i just bought, about a week ago, Hip Kosher by Ronnie Fein. I have her Idiots Guide to cooking which, despite the name, is one of the best cookbooks i've ever used - simple, tasty, true to description, etc. Anyway, the book is good. It's no different than any other "regular" cookbook, i.e. not full of eastern european heavy fare but the "normal" stuff we eat. fresh fish, pea soup, cornish hen... so it's not at all what you expect from a kosher cookbook. it's different (thank goodness)

anyway i need to cook for the second night of passover but we are having a casual evening for friends our age (mid 30s) and i don't want to recreate (my favrite) traditional foods from the first night at my in-laws, so i bought this, and it's what i need (and what was promised). i actually am gonna pick up 2 copies as passover gifts for my mom and mom-in-law.

My family loves salads in the summer, but we were bored with the same old, same old. I started browsing cookbooks for something new and found it in Hip Kosher. I didn't really know what Kosher cooking was all about, but, as a fan of the Idiot's Guide to American Cooking, I did know I like Ronnie Fein recipes. She has done it again. Steak Salad with Mustard Shallot Vinaigrette and Turkey Couscous Salad with Grapes, Oranges and Cashews drew raves from everyone, children included. I've just begun to explore the vegetables, entrees and desserts and I am thrilled not only with the wonderful blend of flavors, but with how easy they are to prepare. Hip Kosher is a treasure -- whether you are hip, Kosher or just like good food!

Ms. Fine's new book is perfect for those of us who are not born cooks. Her tips and sidebars give excellent advice and make the recipes easy to execute. My favorite so far is Turkey Couscous Salad for which I used chicken that I had on hand. It is simple and delicious, not like anything I have prepared before. Ms. Fine also suggests other ingredients that would work in this dish; I will experiment with these. A wonderful recipe for lunch or supper on a warm summer's day.
