Product Description

The Digital Weather Station is unique in that it doesn't rely on internal sensors and circuits to display the weather and time. Instead, it connects to the Internet to retrieve the actual time and weather conditions From Weatheronline so you get the exact weather all the time. This weather station can be set up to retrieve the weather forecast information of thousands of cities throughout the world. During the setup process, you will enter your country, state and the closet city to your location. It will then receive weather conditions for a five-day period from the city you select. Weather conditions you can monitor include the CURRENT indoor and outdoor temperatures; the day's expected high and low temperatures, and the sun's ultra-violet index. In addition, forecast predictions will be displayed for cloudy, sunny, rainy and snowy conditions or combinations such as partly cloudy, mostly sunny, sun mixed with showers and others. Time and date information includes the actual time in hours, minutes and seconds and also has two built in alarm times. Weather data is retrieved from the Internet and updates automatically every few minutes (or with one click of your mouse), and is wirelessly transmitted through the included USB dongle to the weather station that is displayed anywhere in your house. It can be wall mounted or standalone on any flat surface with the included standing mount.

(C.) This also requires you to install bad software on your computer along with the drivers for your computer to transmit the weather and updates to the clock.

The manual left out big pieces of explaining the product, and the software is not Mac friendly.

I like the concept of this weather station, but encountered several flaws in its current behaviour.

HIPE weather station is not your typical weather station which has a probe that measures the weather conditions right outside your house. Instead it gets information from the internet and then broadcasts the information, using a USB wireless dongle, to the display unit somewhere in your house. The weather station can only operate when the wireless dongle is plugged into the computer and computer is turned on and connected to the internet. In the current version (6/6/2013) the information is updated and broadcast every 55 seconds.

To configure the unit you select a city for which information is available that is the closest to your location. I check two states that I am close to and each had 9 cities to select from. My closest choices were 10-15 miles away, so I noticed slight variation in the forecast and the conditions near my house. I have one of those old-fashioned weather stations with a temperature probe that I was comparing this unit with.

The weather station comes with software for Windows and Mac. I installed it on the Windows machine. The installation was very easy, the display immediately received the broadcast. However the install did not follow Windows standards and normal good software practices of (1) asking the user where to install the software and installed the package at root level on C: drive (2) asking the user whether he/she want to add an icon to the system tray (3) giving the user an option to suppress system tray pop-ups that are generated every 55 seconds when the software broadcasts the weather (which need to be dismissed manually).

I like this weather station and it has a lot of features. It is linked to the internet and to a weather program that allows it to download weather details and forecast to make it a powerful tool that can help you plan your actions for a day or even for several days. In the box you will find the weather station with a 7 inch display, a software disk, a transmitter dongle, a screw in rod that acts as a stand, a USB extension cable that remotes the transmitter dongle away from your computer to improve the transmission range and an instruction manual.

The weather station is powered by two AAA batteries that are not included with the unit. The back of the unit has 6 buttons which are used for setup and programming and a recessed reset button to take the unit back to its basic operation setup.

The unit displays the time, inside and outside temperature, the date and day, today's forecast and the forecast for the next 4 days, the UV index and you can set up alarms. The instructions were brief but they were missing some simple and key bits of information. The transmitter updates the weather information to the weather station every 55 seconds. Unfortunately I know of no way of confirming that an update was received and that the update is displayed on the weather station.

The software disk contains a copy of the two page manual and software for Windows and Mac installation.

Cons:
* The display can be hard to see if you are looking at it from the side at a higher or lower level than the screen is setting at. It has a lot of display parallax issues if you are not looking at the display from the same level it is setting at.

This weather station could be a good product if I was able to receive weather information. There is no weather information past September 30th. Right now I can only see the inside temperature. There is also no contact information other than an email address for support from the company. I will wait to see how long it takes to receive an email back. Quite frustrated.

I think the largest problem and the reason for my potentially overly critical review is the large gap between my expectations and the reality of this clock. I've also seen better internet weather clocks for around the same price. I have listed the problems I found below:

1. This clock does not pick up the time and weather through your wi-fi. The clock requires you to attach a usb dongle to an actively turned on computer to check the time and weather. Most 'wireless' internet clocks that include a weather feature generally have a real wireless card built in to use your existing wi-fi home network to update the time and weather forecasts. To rely on a usb dongle- (A.) constantly uses up a valuable USB slot on your computer. (B.) requires your computer to be on all the time for it to be able to update the weather forecast. (C.) This also requires you to install bad software on your computer along with the drivers for your computer to transmit the weather and updates to the clock.

2. The software that this clock requires you install is also poorly designed and limits the accuracy of the forecast you receive. One would assume the programmers to link the software to a well designed weather forecast site like (weather.com) or (weatherunderground.com), or even (bing weather) where you can input your zip or city, state and retrieve the local weather. However, the software limits you to a few large cities in your state and can only receive weather for the chosen city. The closest city for me was still 50 miles away and I live in a mountainous region where the weather in that city and mine are fairly different. Oh... and the software isn't even included requiring you to download it from their website.

3. The clock failed to receive and broke after a week and a half of use....
