Harlem/Hippies = Amazing lo-fi garage rock,

This review is from: Hippies (MP3 Download)
I bought the MP3 version of the album after hearing Friendly Ghost and Gay Human Bones on the radio. The entire album is equally catchy and filled with great songs. There's so much spirit and energy running through the recording that its hard not to get these songs stuck in your head.
I hear many different things in the music in terms of influences, but there is nothing so strong that it sounds like anyone other than Harlem. There are similarities to the Pixies in the nonsensical lyrics or guitar sound on Gay Human Bones. There's also a heavy dose of early White Stripes and some rhythmic similarities to Velvet Underground and a few others. If there were to be a quibble with the album its that it sounds like the mastering levels are too high (intentionally, I'm sure), and while this may heighten the sense of a low-fi garage band, it would be nice to hear these songs with clean production. It's not as badly distorted as The Stooges "Raw Power," but its present throughout the album. I highly recommend this album. Its my best purchase of the year so far!

When a friend and I first heard this album, we thought The Clash. But its another great album of Scuzzy, Basement Jam, Garage Punk Rock with a nice hint of Pop Music.
