Harlem/Hippies = Amazing lo-fi garage rock,

I bought the MP3 version of the album after hearing Friendly Ghost and Gay Human Bones on the radio. The entire album is equally catchy and filled with great songs. There's so much spirit and energy running through the recording that its hard not to get these songs stuck in your head.
I hear many different things in the music in terms of influences, but there is nothing so strong that it sounds like anyone other than Harlem. There are similarities to the Pixies in the nonsensical lyrics or guitar sound on Gay Human Bones. There's also a heavy dose of early White Stripes and some rhythmic similarities to Velvet Underground and a few others. If there were to be a quibble with the album its that it sounds like the mastering levels are too high (intentionally, I'm sure), and while this may heighten the sense of a low-fi garage band, it would be nice to hear these songs with clean production. It's not as badly distorted as The Stooges "Raw Power," but its present throughout the album. I highly recommend this album. Its my best purchase of the year so far!

I didn't really get HOW good the album was the first few listens. I knew I found a great new band that had a few songs I really liked, but it felt like after song 6 i just got a little repetitive. Then my ear adjusted more to the sound, and I definitely began to like the second half of the album, in fact these days that's where more of my favorite songs are. So, I would say this album has a little bit of a curve, there are some songs that I think most people will love right away, and there others that you have to listen to the album a few times to fully appreciate. I've felt the same way about other albums in the past, Nirvana's Nevermind was one of them. This is a fun, happy album though, no Nirvana gloom with death lingering in the background. There are so many artists that you could reference, and I think that's what makes this album special and not really derivative of any one influence.
Reviews aren't really my thing, but if something is especially good or bad, I like to let people know. This album is particularly good! Listen to the samples, if it sounds like your thing, get your hands on it however you can. The past 15 months have put out some great music, and this is on my list of the best.

One of the best of 2010, for sure,

I randomly stumbled across this band while surfing around on KEXP's website. This band blends lo-fi punk with 60s rock. It's a wonderful blend. I can tell this is going to be one of the best albums of 2010, and I've just heard these samples on Amazon. I'm definitely rushing out to buy this whenever I can.
Harlem is exemplary. This blend of rock is simple and straight to the point, which sometimes isn't the case in a lot of Indie rock. I highly recommend this album.

I got this record,

I got this record and I listened to the first part, and then I listened to the second part. They have guitars and drums and stuff. I listened to it again, and thought of other bands they sort of sound like, sort of. They don't sound the least bit like the Pixies, by the way. I wondered if they had class, but then I noted the record label, so that was good. Then, in a bit of dramatic self-confirmation, I read the reviews on Amazon and finally decided that yes, I did like this record. But if you're reading this, you won't get it.

Catchy as hell,

Not very well produced and no originality at all during the 40 minutes of this album. Then why have I listened to it 3 days in a row now? (For me that's an eternity). For one it's the surfy open sound that reminds you of those highschool bands with some practice, but not too much. It's exactly how a starting band should sound in their garage. Easy strumming and drumming, easy lyrics but catchy as hell. This Austin band was picked up by Matador and the Matador seal is in most cases one of class. So it is here.
