Book Description

Hippocrene Companion Guides May 1992
This guide is designed for discriminating travellers and first-time residents who want to penetrate beneath the surface of what they see, and who want more from a guidebook than a list of hotels and museums. In addition to informed descriptions of Mexico's most popular destinations and a wealth of practical advice (language, driving, shopping, safety), this guide provides the reader with a perceptive understanding of the historical roots and contemporary realities of Mexican society, religion, and politics. Written for the curious non-specialist, its informative chapters point out the specific sites and everyday occurrences that demonstrate its themes. Insightful sections on race and class, family and gender, and Mexican concepts of time and space are the result of the author's own extensive experience in Mexico. This is the ideal 'companion' for the inquisitive traveller who wants more than a guidebook.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This entry in the "Hippocrene Companion" series has a similar scope and format to Graeme Newman and Tasmin Newman's Guide to Australia ( LJ 3/15/92). It eschews the listings of hotels, schedules, and other changing information available in traditional annual guides, offering instead an informative overview of Mexico and its people, customs, and land. Latin American specialist Burke (history, Villanova Univ.) does advise on how to enter the country, what to bring, what to see, health, driving, money, and many other important subjects. To be read before going to Mexico and in planning a route, this book is highly recommended, but a more conventional guide (or a travel agent) will also be necessary for details on modes of travel or where to stay and eat. -- George M. Jenks, Bucknell Univ., Lewisburg, Pa.
