Book Description

June 1, 1993
The Black South, areas chock-full of historical and cultural landmarks of African-American significance, should not be considered just offbeat, road-less-travelled sections of the more traditional South, but the foundation of its very existence. The purpose of this book is to document and highlight the significant contributions that Southern blacks have made to their country. The Historic Black South includes historic sites, churches, museums, art galleries, festivals, restaurants, nightclubs, jazz joints, birthsites, gravesites, radio programs, record stores, barbershops, beaches, parks, schools, and markets -- the essence of the black communities.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This travel book covers the historical and cultural landmarks of the African American South, sightseeing destinations that are often overlooked in the current literature. The authors cover a region of nine Southern states and the District of Columbia and point out churches, gravesites, historic locations, nightclubs, museums, art galleries, schools, markets, and jazz and blues landmarks. We venture to Jackie Robinson Baseball Park in Daytona Beach, Florida, for example, where Robinson played his first major league game, and to the Alex Haley Home and Museum in Henning, Tennessee. Each chapter includes a brief section on the history of that state and then lists sites in the various cities. The book provides some wonderful reading and will inspire tourists to explore a part of the South that has not been emphasized in travel. Recommended for most public libraries.
