Book Description

January 1, 2008
Webster's paperbacks take advantage of the fact that classics are frequently assigned readings in English courses. By using a running English-to-Afrikaans thesaurus at the bottom of each page, this edition of Hippolytus & The Bacchae by Euripides was edited for three audiences. The first includes Afrikaans-speaking students enrolled in an English Language Program (ELP), an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) program, an English as a Second Language Program (ESL), or in a TOEFL or TOEIC preparation program. The second audience includes English-speaking students enrolled in bilingual education programs or Afrikaans speakers enrolled in English-speaking schools. The third audience consists of students who are actively building their vocabularies in Afrikaans in order to take foreign service, translation certification, Advanced Placement (AP) or similar examinations. By using the Webster's Afrikaans Thesaurus Edition when assigned for an English course, the reader can enrich their vocabulary in anticipation of an examination in Afrikaans or English.<br>TOEFL, TOEIC, AP and Advanced Placement are trademarks of the Educational Testing Service which has neither reviewed nor endorsed this book. 4.0 out of 5 stars Not the greatest e-book translation, but still pretty decent, December 14, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Euripides was the last in the line of tragic playwrights after Aeschylus and Sophocles. From a play standpoint, he was the first person to really introduce the deux ex machina tool and had a really good rhyming scheme, although the plays are not up to the level (I think) of Sophocles.

This particular free Kindle book is halfway decent. One of the things that seems common to some transcriptions is that when a character has lots of lines of dialog, it's condensed into paragraph form. In a way it's more difficult to read because you can't get a feel of the rhyme and meter of the play.

But it's still a decent read and a good introduction to Ancient Greek plays. And it's free. So, what's not to like?
