Hippooppsites is a fun book that teaches children all about opposites in way that I've never seen before! As the reader opens the book they'll see a very friendly red hippopotamus. As you read on you'll be shown opposites such as small and large, light and heavy, thick and thin, and so on. This book uniquely takes opposites even further and caters toward even the hands on learners in an interactive way by showing with tactile elements of soft (fur) and rough (burlap), featuring the difference between full and empty with die-cuts, and more!

I've been teaching my four year old daughter opposites lately and with the help of this book, she's really getting it! My 16 month old son even enjoys listening to me read and is it quite captivated by the bold pictures. Now this book does take you above and beyond what opposites most kids may be learning. For instance there's opaque and transparent, positive and negative, visible and invisible, clear and blurry and so on. I appreciate the differences and the challenges this book brings to the table. And it's one I'll proudly display on my shelf and recommend to parents that are looking for something different and unique. A book that's simple yet challenging. It's the best of both worlds, in my opinion.

The book has heavy duty thick pages which should hold up well to the hands of little ones, which in my experience are often covered with food, and or drool. I also mentioned the word FEEL when I might have substituted the word TEXTURE for it. Although all the pages are printed in a glossy finish with bright colors and one word underneath each picture to identify the concepts being presented, some of the pictures as the one for SOFT [uses a pink fuzzy feeling cloth] while the one describing ROUGH [uses a cloth that is or is similar to burlap]. The predominant colors are white and a bright red, which should keep the baby/toddler's attention. I liked the sturdy page construction and it should make the pages hold up well. I can see some one year olds liking the book, but it may find its mark a little better for 16-24 month olds. Each parent's/grandparent's experience is unique and I purchased this for a young grandson. No offense intended to aunts, uncles, and other family members who also buy presents. :)

More sophisticated than the usual opposites book, with pages illustrating opposites such as opaque versus transparent, in front versus behind, clear versus blurry, etc. Very well done, and enjoyable for people in a large age range: our adult family members don't mind revisiting these minimalist hippos again and again, and my 4 month old nephew is fascinated with this book and (as frequently as can be expected) quiets down to enjoy the pages. His favorite pages are positive versus negative space and stripes versus dots :)

My Review: In this book the Hippo introduces all sorts of concepts in this fun board book. The concept of opposites such as light and heavy, using thin and thick lines to draw out the Hippo and using black dots to show positive and white dots to show negative. It also shows the Hippo standing in front of a tree and behind showing the Hippo behind the tree and so on.

This is a great concept for early learning and the illustrations are simple and will hold the attention of any child.

This is totally cute! A large size board book full of educational value. Including all sorts of opposites all in the shape and form of a hippopotamus. What I love about this book is that there are normal opposites that are often taught such as small/large, but there are neat ones like dotted and striped too and don't forget the textures between soft and rough. This is great for my toddler who is almost a preschooler as well as my baby who us almost a toddler. I will definitely pull for this one again and again for education as well as fun. Love!

Thanks to Abram's for providing a copy for review.

I saw this in our local library and thought it was super cute for babies and kinda silly for the adults reading it to them. It has become my go-to baby shower book.

My son (currently 20mo) has had us check this book out from the library four times for the full length of time (renewed twice, for a total of nine weeks check out each time). Since he loves it so much, we bought him his own copy and returned the other.

The hippo images are simple and charming. They offer a great variety of perspectives in front of/behind, thick/thin, dotted/striped, and so on. My son's favorite pages are the full/empty and soft/rough pages, which offer both textures and visuals.

Have a young toddler? They're sure to read this one again and again.

My daughter really loves this. It's fun and best of all, it's opposites you don't always see a lot. That's what caught my eye the most. I get tired of all opposite books having the same few things, here you see things like 'alone and together', and it's done in a way that is fresh, which is not easy to do with well known material. The simple art work also makes it easy to enjoy without a lot of busy. I would say this can be a fun book for most kids five and under.

This book has large (about a foot square), high-quality board book pages and bright, stark graphics. It simply uses a bold graphic of a hippo with the word printed on the bottom. Three of the pages also have texture. The page for "empty" has a missing hippo, where the outline of the hippo is felt in the raised page. The pages for "soft" and "rough" have a hippo made out of soft fur and burlap, respectively.
