Book Description

0313255741 978-0313255748 February 24, 1988 annotated edition
As a bio-bibliographical sketch of Johnson, this work is divided into two sections. It begins with a biographical sketch of Johnson's political career; this provides a perspective on California's progressive era, the League of Nations controversy, the Great Depression and the New Deal, the controversy over the reorganization of the Supreme Court, and preparation for World War II. Quotations from Johnson's major speeches, newspaper accounts of his campaigns, and excerpts from personal letters are included. The biographical sketch is followed by an annotated bibliography that is divided into a collection of selected works mentioning Johnson, articles written by him, and a collection of important speeches taken from the Congressional Record.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Johnson, governor and later US senator from California, was one of the critical figures of the Progressive movement. As governor (1910-1916) he oversaw the implementation of popular democratic initiatives in the state, and was the first vice-presidential nominee at the National Progressive Party Convention. In 1917, he resigned as governor to launch a 29-year career in the Senate, during which he became one of the nation's foremost proponents of unilateralism and nonintervention in world affairs. His career provides a clue to the oft-debated historical question: What happened to the Progressive Movement in the 1920s? This bibliography makes Johnson's career accessible to general scholars and offers useful leads to Johnson's speeches and writings for the specialist. Especially valuable are the more than 100 citations to and abstracts of speeches in the Congressional Record and the list of manuscript collections holding some of Johnson's letters.”–Choice
