Product Description

Size: 8" Pot

Meyer Lemons are especially desired for their pleasant aroma and small shrub-like size which makes them well suited for gardens. The tree is moderately vigorous and cold hardy. The fruit is medium sized, short and has an elliptical shape. The rind is smooth, yellow and thin. The flesh is juicy, slightly orange, somewhat acidic and moderately seedy. Suitable for zones 9-10. Immediate shipping: Growing in 8" pot, about 18" tall. Fruiting size. We cannot ship citrus to; American Samoa, Arizona, California, Florida, Guam, Hawaii, Lousiana, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, Texas, Virgin Islands as per USDA. Regulations.

I have had it for about a month now, and still no flowers, but the foliage is very healthy.

I'm hoping to repot it soon so it can continue to grow.

I've been researching lemon trees for awhile. I came across this Meyer lemon tree and it had really good reviews. After a month or so, I finally decided to get it. The price was reasonable so even if it didn't work out, I wouldn't lose too much money. I ordered the tree on a Monday and it came on Thursday... much faster than I expected. The packaging was great, the soil was still moist and the tree looked very healthy ( even though it was sitting outside for the whole day in 40 degrees weather). The tree measures 17" from the top of the pot to the tallest branch. There are two golf ball size lemons and a bunch of tiny ones. There are some flowers waiting to blossom. The tree also has new growth on it. Overall I am extremely happy and excited for the tree to grow. I will attach some pictures so hopefully it will be helpful for the next buyer.

UPDATED June 21, 2012: The lemon tree is still doing great. The two golf ball sized lemon survived--the tiny ones did die and drop off. However, the tree has been blossoming so much. Even if it doesn't produce a lot of lemons, it's a great indoor plant. The blossoms smell incredible and it is beautiful. I'm hoping to repot it soon so it can continue to grow. I hope Hirt adds other citrus trees to their collection, I would definitely purchase from them again!

I've wanted a lemon tree with flowers and fruit on it, like the photos, since forever. After reading the reviews, I went ahead and orderd it. The tree arrived fast via USPS, well packed with styrofoam popcorn, wrapped in paper to keep the branches together, and masking tape over the soil. Its a vigorous tree, with roots reaching the bottom of the 8" grower's pot. It only lost a few leaves and a small branch during shipping. Watering immediately after recieving the tree, perks it right up. However, I dont have a single flower or fruit on my tree. I emailed Hirts about this. They answered the email within a couple of hours. He explained that they got a new shipment of plants in, and that my plant would flower in 1-2 weeks. Since I dont even see flower buds, i'm not so sure. So, if you are buying this plant, expecting to recieve the immature lemons, or flowers, that the other reviewers have....you are going to be disappointed. However, if you just want to get a nice tree, that will eventually flower and fruit, this seems to be a good deal.
ONE YEAR UPDATE
WOW, did this tree surprised me, after I wrote this review. I had transplanted it, after a couple of weeks, into a larger pot, about 3 gallon, using a well draining mix. Then, I fertilized it with high nitrogen fertilizer. That's when it took off. First, it grew some amazing branches. All over,8-10 large branches, some with big leaves. Then, it flowered. I'd say all this happened within 6 weeks of the review. I reduced the number of baby lemons on the tree to TWO baby lemons. By September, the two lemons were the size of silver dollars. WHen it got cold out, say early October, I bought it inside, to an unheated room with a big window. (In the dead of winter, I used a supplemental florescent grow light.

I ordered this product on Sunday and received the shipping notification via email a few hours later. It arrived Tuesday in a box clearly labeled "perishable" on the outside. It appeared carefully packaged with peanuts and plastic along with the coffee plant that came in the same box. The plant is a healthy deep green and I see no visible sign of any infestation. It came in a 8" pot per the specifications and measures almost exactly 18" tall. (this includes the root system) It had a half dozen or so fruits on it...the largest one being about the circumference of a half-dollar. I did find one broken branch that appears to have happened during packaging but I will not hold it against them as the plant seems very healthy overall and has new growth on it. It does not quite have the showroom look of the photo but is very pleasing in my opinion.

This is a difficult review to write because although the tree I received was indeed a Meyer Lemon I did not receive a 'Hirt's Meyer Lemon' (As it is listed in Amazon's product database) - It was a 'Larry's Orchid's & Tropicals Meyer Lemon'.

There really should be separate product pages for different growers of plants here on Amazon. Or at the very least just call this product a 'Meyer Lemon' so people will be more aware that their tree could come from anywhere. As it stands, if the Hirt's nursery runs out of stock, the orders placed afterwards will default to Larry's Orchid's and Tropicals and you will receive a very different looking Meyer Lemon then what is pictured above.

That said, I will submit a picture of the Meyer Lemon I received from Larry's so you can be the judge.

That is, by in large, why my rating is 4 stars instead of 5. Below are my thoughts on the specific tree I received from Larry's:

The tree I received from Larry's doesn't resemble the shrub-like appearance of the customer's images of the Hirt's Meyer Lemon at the time I ordered. Instead it seems Larry prefers the aesthetic of a more 'tree-like' Meyer lemon. The plant has been pruned of all limbs up to a height of ~2' above the planter's soil line and the total height of the tree is approx 3'.

Now don't get me wrong here, I am not displeased with my purchase in the slightest-I prefer the tree-like aesthetic of Larry's Lemons. However, looking through the many reviews here people are rightfully confused about what they thought they were getting vs. what they received.
