1.0 out of 5 stars Patronizing generalisms with no scientific value
This is a book for immature readers who wish only to confirm very simple views of the sexes. It is my first Amazon book review; I read past the first several pages only to fully report how terribly patronizing this book is. It offers no scientific value and attempts to debunk any medical research with an image of God tinkering with his design: no intelligent separation of...

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVED this book!, January 13, 2008
This review is from: His Brain, Her Brain: How Divinely Designed Differences Can Strengthen Your Marriage (Paperback)
You will be very surprised at what you find inside the pages of this outstanding book, His Brain, Her Brain. Dr. Walt Larimore, and his wife Barbara take you on a journey inside the brain, both male and female, and you will be amazed at what they have found. Very interesting!
We have all heard that men and women are different, and of course we all would say a big," Amen!" to that. But do you know that it is scientifically so? In this work you will understand the why's that make us so different, yet merge us so well together. You will marvel at the wonder of the brain as it functions, in both male and female, for the role they are to take. In understanding this, many problems can be resolved, and you will learn these differences can be used to build a stronger relationship with one another.
His Brain, Her Brain is not written in a text book form, but is crafted in such a way that you are learning the science of your brain without even realizing it. I loved the way Dr. Larimore had his wife Barbara add her comments. It gave warmth to the read, and brought the view point of both sexes in on many subjects. This is one great book that every man and woman should have. I believe it will truly make a difference in your life and your relationships. Great job!

5.0 out of 5 stars I Love This Book So Much!, February 13, 2009
By
This review is from: His Brain, Her Brain: How Divinely Designed Differences Can Strengthen Your Marriage (Paperback)
I love this book so much! As I was reading it I shared all the valuable knowledge I was learning with my husband, my mother and my sister. I never thought a book with scientific knowledge could be so interesting, but it really had me engaged! I found Walt's and Barb's observations on 'his' and 'her' brains to be so true! I laughed at some of the examples they gave as I found them to be true in my marriage too!

Not only that, but the book is so well organised and presented. I love the cover design and interior design of the book with its little light bulb graphics. I also love their use of diagrams and tables (a particularly funny diagram on page 42-43 demonstrates the differences between a man's and woman's brain). The book has a Scripture index, Subject index and Sources page - which made me love it even more...

But perhaps what I loved the most was the insights it contained inside the pages such as:
* Both science and the bible support the idea that men and women are so different.
* At 6 weeks in the womb an unborn male's brain surges with testosterone. When this process was blocked in rats - they acted like females their entire life.
* The left hemisphere of the brain controls the right side of body and focuses on logic, reason and speech whereas the right hemisphere controls left side of body and is the creative side of the brain.
* Testosterone is responsible for aggression and assertiveness in males. Competition can raise the level of testosterone.
* Oxytocin, often called the cuddle or bonding hormone, is released when couples cuddle.
* Women tend to have higher oxytocin levels than men.
* When a mother looks into the eyes of her baby, her oxytocin levels soar much higher than a man's, and this rush is extremely pleasurable to her.
* Women can see more colours than men.
* Women feel more pain and have less tolerance to it than men.
* A women's sense of smell and taste are stronger than a man's.
* Only 10 percent of women have spatial abilities that are as good as the average male (such as the ability to read maps).
* Researchers studied men and women who were "truly, deeply in love" with each other. They scanned their brains when looking at pictures of their loved one and of other strangers. Their brains lit up in the same areas that cause the euphoria of narcotic addictions when they saw their partner's pictures.
* Women who are childless or lose a child have levels of depression comparable to those with AIDs and Cancer.

And many more interesting facts inside!

I highly recommend this book. You will begin to understand your partner on a whole new level. You will realise that many of your complaints such as your husband not listening, your wife nagging you for a cuddle... have perfectly biological explanations! Well done Walt and Barb Larimore.

5.0 out of 5 stars Where Have You Been?, March 3, 2008

This review is from: His Brain, Her Brain: How Divinely Designed Differences Can Strengthen Your Marriage (Paperback)
All I can say to Walt and Barb is WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? This wonderful book is for every woman who has been exasperated by a man's behavior and every man who has been mystified by his wife's (or girlfriend's)! We have been expecting each other to see, hear and feel exactly as we do. There were so many light bulb moments I was compelled to call everyone I know and say "stop yelling (sighing, crying, pouting, fighting...)and read this book!" Now you can undestand the profound and beautiful differences between a man and a woman. A remarkable and insightful, medically sound, convincingly written book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stuggling to understand your spouse? Read this book!, May 2, 2008
This review is from: His Brain, Her Brain: How Divinely Designed Differences Can Strengthen Your Marriage (Paperback)
As a pastor, I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to better understand why their mate acts they way she or he does. People often mistakenly believe that their spouse acts the way they do simply to be annoying. This book does an outstanding job of presenting the evidence for God's unique design of men and women. Yes, we are in fact very different - by design!

Through their presentation, the Larimores detail how the differences are actually part of God's plan for creating women and men to complement one another. Their own stories and the easy to understand presentation of the scientific facts are wonderful and help the reader to better grasp this idea.

I strongly advise anyone considering marriage, or any couple recently married to get this book and read it together. You will laugh together, point fingers at one another, and in the end, gain the freedom to allow each other to operate as God has uniquely created each of you to operate in this world and in your relationship. It is also a great read for anyone that has been married for many years.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Buy for All Couples, Married, Engaged, Seriously Dating, March 3, 2008
This review is from: His Brain, Her Brain: How Divinely Designed Differences Can Strengthen Your Marriage (Paperback)
I love this book!!!! I have ordered 13 more for friends and family because it has so humorously, scientifically and spiritually addressed the differences in men and women better than any I have read. It is a great book for couples who have been married years, couples considering marriage, or, even young people not yet in a serious relationship. In fact, I will start giving this book as an engagement present. This book has made me appreciate, admire and understand my husband better. Also, I recognized my own reactions in Barbara Larimore's comments.

1.0 out of 5 stars Patronizing generalisms with no scientific value, December 20, 2011

This review is from: His Brain, Her Brain: How Divinely Designed Differences Can Strengthen Your Marriage (Paperback)
This is a book for immature readers who wish only to confirm very simple views of the sexes. It is my first Amazon book review; I read past the first several pages only to fully report how terribly patronizing this book is. It offers no scientific value and attempts to debunk any medical research with an image of God tinkering with his design: no intelligent separation of church and state, as it were, and thus chock full of normative language. The authors start with a title on the science of their claims, but in the same section they give silly anecdotes from family friends and talk in cutesy language before offending the reader with empty verbiage. They manipulate quotations from experts, researchers and academics and distinctly avoid credible statistics. Quoting for the sake of quoting. Fluffy.

This book does a disservice to men and especially women. The female author's words are in italics, like a warbling voice from the peanut gallery, reducing her participation to a virtual vapid cartoon bubble. Demeaning epithets and kitschy diagrams abound (a male brain with a single "domestic skills neuron" and disproportionate "gawking and ogling lobe"), as do trite disclaimers that their gross generalisms don't hold true for everyone. They simply repeat stereotypes while hollowly encouraging users to challenge them. They even have a section devoted to why little girls rooms "smell fresh" and little boys' rooms are malodorous. Value? I think not.

More importantly, this book does a disservice to people of faith with scientific minds and critical thinking skills. In my career, I have met men and women of science who are serious Christians: people who balance academic lives with family lives. Heads of large households. I wanted to gain insight into what made them tick. This book did not deliver.

5.0 out of 5 stars MUST READ! You won't be disappointed!, August 5, 2009
This review is from: His Brain, Her Brain: How Divinely Designed Differences Can Strengthen Your Marriage (Paperback)
This is such an interesting and helpful book! My pre-marriage counselor bought it for my husband and I to read and discuss during our sessions. It was a great book and how the authors interlace science with real like experiences and biblical texts is masterful! The book is witty yet poignant with MANY valid points! As my husband and I read it, we could relate to SO much and obtained a better understanding of why we do the things we do and think the way we do! It also helps couples to pinpoint problems and their root causes that might not have been understood otherwise! This is a MUST READ for couples, especially those about to embark om marriage and not to mention those who are already married, but need a refreshing perspective on things!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ah, Love! Why do you have to be so different?, March 21, 2008

Anthony Centore Ph.D. "Anthony Centore Ph.D." (www.ThriveBoston.com (Cambridge, MA)) - See all my reviews
This review is from: His Brain, Her Brain: How Divinely Designed Differences Can Strengthen Your Marriage (Paperback)
Ah, Love! Why do you have to be so different? His Brain, Her Brain explains it all. This book is enlightening and brings to light new medical discoveries. Walt and Barb clarify why men and women are so different in a clinically-oriented and yet humorous manner. These differences can help strengthen the marriage through understanding them. Through diversity comes unity and you can use this book on many levels in your life in facing diversities, finding someone, or just learning to respect and understand differences. The Larimores take this book to a much deeper level than simply pointing out how men and women are different.

This book is engaging, humorous, uses medical science as well as biblical truths. These insights open your mind to even understanding God more and why we are all special through His creations. The key to a successful marriage is having that foundation and the bond is deepened through honoring God. This book can save your marriage and rear you away from divorce through understanding God's plan for your marriage. This book breaks down our bodies and puts medical science in a humorous light. We can laugh at our differences instead of create conflicts. If we were all the same, the world would be a boring place. The mysteries of marriage are revealed in this book. Exploring our differences can lighten up and excite our relationship.

This book uses the latest research and brings the Larimores' thirty years of marriage experience and counseling into light. Scientists have found discoveries with innate differences between men and women and goes beyond the nurture, environment, culture and society upbringings for each individual. This book shows how understanding differences in marriage can bring about bigger changes in helping your marriage relationship, serve God and help others in a more meaningful and bigger way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essence of His/Her Brain, October 7, 2009
By

This review is from: His Brain, Her Brain: How Divinely Designed Differences Can Strengthen Your Marriage (Paperback)
"The Creator's plan is that his brain is designed to truly love, honor, nourish and cherish his spouse."

"The Creator's plan for her brain is designed to truly respect, admire, and encourage her spouse."

This book is filled with helpful insight to "divine design" of how God created us unique in our own way so that our marriage would be more dynamic and representative of His intended purpose in the garden. Walt does an excellent job keeping the scientific facts and evidence clear and understandable for the layperson as well as the counselor. Is this the best book to recommend to those who are needing guidance in their marriage? Not sure. Do you like learning about chemicals in the brain and how it affects us in one way or another? Then this is a good read. Part 1 and Part 2 of the book are devoted to building a foundation of the scientific evidence of his and her brain. This is not a textbook or dry science, Walt and Barb pieced interactive stories throughout the book to keep it moving towards pragmatics. Yes, male and female are different, but this book allows you to see how this will help or hinder your marriage according to our brains.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rocommended for all engaged couples, August 4, 2008

This review is from: His Brain, Her Brain: How Divinely Designed Differences Can Strengthen Your Marriage (Paperback)
His Brain, Her Brain: How Divinely Designed Differences Can Strengthen Your Marriage

This book has given me more insight into the mind of a male than 28 years of marriage has. It has shown me the answers to many questions that have puzzled me for years, such as why does my husband always try to solve my problems when all I want him to do is sympathize with me when I share?

Walt Larimore MD and his wife Barbara Larimore have written an entertaining book full of practical information and anecdotes, along with medical and pyschological research which is far from dry and boring. Dr. Larimore also reveals hormonal and physical differences between the brains of men and women.

Dr. Larimore says on page 50, "Researchers have found many, many differences between his brain and her brain---and we predict they'll eventually find thousands more. The reason? His brain and her brain are complexly designed to be delightfully different and to respond in nearly opposite ways."

As the French say, "Viva la difference!"
