This review is from: His Charlie's Tavern Ensemble (Audio CD)
Consumers need to take a close look at this release. The album is actually a compilation of two re-released RCA albums. Al Cohn's Mr.Music and the Cohn portion of Al Cohn / Shorty Roger's East Coast - West Coast Scene. While this fact is made clear in the liner notes, it is not apparent at the ordering level. If you own Mr Music and East Coast Scene the only addition to your library would be one track - Lullaby of Birdland, which appeared in an LP of that name issued in 1955.
The music itself is good enough, although I prefer Al's smaller group performances of this same time period. The ensembles have some very good players, Joe Newmwn, Frank Rehack, Hank Jones, Osie Johnson, pretty much stalwarts of the Jack Lewis RCA lineup of the period. Arrangements are by Cohn, Manny Albam and a rarity by John Carisi. If you own both Mr. Music and East/West Scene you will probably want to pass on this release, if not it's a good example of the New York Scene in 1954.
