5.0 out of 5 stars Don't pass this one by
The trilogy of Golden Compass, Subtle Knife, and Amber Spyglass in one book is the way to go here, because once you read the first, you won't be able to resist reading the next two.

The novels are imaginative, well written, and deep adventures that will keep your interest held throughout. Some depictions of the various worlds that the child heroes go through...

1.0 out of 5 stars This is not a Philip Pullman's trilogy!!!
After reading all the previous reviews, I was very excited to buy the Pullman's trilogy in one book for my son. What I received was a dramatization BASED ON Philip Pullman's trilogy. The cover of the book has two lines on a bottom saying: BASED ON THE NOVELS BY PHILLIP PULLMAN, ADAPTED BY NICHOLAS WRIGHT, which are missing from the image on this page.

I am really confused. Are we talking about the same book? Mine looks exactly like the one on the top of this page.

The novels are imaginative, well written, and deep adventures that will keep your interest held throughout. Some depictions of the various worlds that the child heroes go through will stay in your memory vividly for a very long time. It is a great read, with philosophical questions raised that have burdened humankind forever, and the answers he gives are both sobering and hopeful.

No reservations.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'd have thought it couldn't be done..., December 17, 2004

This particular book is an adaptation of the HDM trilogy for the stage...something I'd have bet money couldn't be done. It would be a bear (armored bear? ;} ) to stage, but I'd love to see it that way. Some things got elided, but the main points remain. A real tour-de-force.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nuanced, condensed, true to the source, November 5, 2011

I don't read plays too often. But, in South Africa, it doesn't look as if we'll get His Dark Materials soon; some ridiculous religious right-wing groups successfully squashed the projected trilogy. This play is dense (in taking Philip Pullman's philosophies and explaining them, both verbally and non verbally) and at the same time gripping and easy to follow. Will and Lyra's relationship (brilliantly foregrounded) and Pullman's insights are very well interpreted and dramatised by Nicholas Wright in this pacy, orginal and accessible play. Very very good indeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars An all-time favorite series., February 10, 2010

No matter your age, please do your imagination a favor by reading these books. They have intellectual depth to compel a Ph.D. and frenzied action to enthrall a 12 year old with uncontrolled ADHD. The movie does not compare to the rich prose, breakneck narrative, and fallible, fully-fleshed characters of the series.

Highly recommended for kids who need help with vocabulary and reading comprehension.

Parents, read the series and bone up on Pullman's references to religion, history, science (and pseudoscience in history!), then read with your child and discuss. You'll both learn a lot!

5.0 out of 5 stars makes Harry look like a Boy Scout!, June 10, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: His Dark Materials (Paperback)
Not that there's anything wrong with Harry. But Lyra, rather than being portrayed as a slightly inept side-kick, is THE HEROINE. Her adventures through the Dark Materials have many levels, in which both adult and older child will find many meanings both metaphorical and physical. I couldn't put this down until I'd read all 3 books in the series. I'm leaving for vacation with all three again after being away for 3 years -- I want to do it all again! I hope you enjoy this wonderful trilogy.

5.0 out of 5 stars it started it all!, April 1, 2006
This review is from: His Dark Materials (Paperback)
my love for and obsession with his dark materials began when i saw the national theatre's production in january '04. so it's only fitting that i would recieve the script version from my sister. obviously, it's not nearly as detailed as the trilogy, with entire characters (such as mary malone) not even appearing, but for a quick read-through, it's perfect. and it brings back, for me, the fabulous memories of seeing it all on stage.
