4.0 out of 5 stars The Gift That Keeps Giving (and Taking) November 22, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Owin has spent the last year of his relationship with Maurina fulfilling her fantasies. On their anniversary, Owin arranges a surprise ménage for Maurina to fulfill a desire she didn't want to admit to.

The story is very well written - which was a pleasant surprise given the volume of utter crap that can be found on Amazon today with the whole Kindle self-publishing movement. This is erotica and, while not long enough to really turn you (me) on, it was very sexy and (sort of) sweet if you understand the dynamics of this alternative lifestyle. The story sheds light on some of the positive sides of a Dominant/submissive relationship - specifically the way in which two partners, not just two horny people, satisfy a need that their partner has in a nurturing way. The other thing I appreciated is that the story shows how a D/s lifestyle doesn't always mean that someone controls your entire life, that a submissive isn't just some cowed, willing slave.

May contain spoilers!

I did have a couple of problems with the story. Foremost, there's no mention of a safe word. NO! They are obviously in a D/s relationship - though their play in this story does not include bondage, toys, or punishment (i.e. spanking) - and that means that she should have a permanent safe word - but she doesn't seem to have one. A lot of books now touch of various aspects of BDSM, enlightening people and maybe encouraging them to try something different. BDSM involves a great deal of trust... you're putting yourself in the hands of someone else, letting them decide what to do to your body and your mind. There's a great deal of psychology that also goes into a good Master/submissive relationship and you can never fully know what will trigger something bad for your partner.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hot stuff in both concept and craft April 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Finding good erotica is tough. There's a strange balance going on between writing craft and concept and finding a good one is hard. I guess that's true of all literature, regardless of genre, but it seems particularly acute in the realm of dirty stories.

Luckily Gillian Colbert has both attributes in her favour. 'His Gift' is not only well written, it packs a wallop in its concept and execution. A taboo-bursting tale that fires on all cylinders with an economy of language and an uppercut of pure filthy adrenaline. Elegant but sizzling hot. A rare find in the spicy end of the book rack.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's Pretty Much A Love Scene February 23, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this short story. It's really well written. But be aware that pretty much the entire story encompasses one love scene. Although the website lists the page count at 23 pages, you should know that the actual story ends at around 60%; the rest of the book consists of previews of other works by the author. The story begins with Maurina lying naked in a hotel room, awaiting the arrival of her boyfriend, Owin, on their one year anniversary. Maurina and Owin are in a BDSM relationship, where he is the Dom and she the Sub. While awaiting Owin's arrival, Maurina thinks back to how she and he first met, and the reader is given a cursory view of structure of their relationship. The entire rest of the story describes the ménage sexual encounter between Owin, Maurina, and the anniversary gift he got for her. The love scene is hot; the interaction between Owin and Maurina sweet, giving the reader clear indication that their relationship is about more than just dominance and submission. I'd say this book is somewhere between a 3 and a 3 1/2 star read...what's there is good, but a little more in depth background of the couple would have made it so much better. Bottom line, I enjoyed it and would recommend it as a worthwhile read, so long as you're not looking for a fully developed story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad. March 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Gillian Colbert, <strong>His Gift</strong> (Smashwords, 2011)

NOTE: SPOILER territory ahead (not with details but with the direction of the piece, but still).

A D&S short, so not normally my thing, but it does play up the love angle rather than going for the cheap "do this or suffer the consequences, bitch" angle one normally finds in one-handed fiction, so I definitely give Colbert points for that (and also for not answering the central question posed here--that must have been hard to resist, but not doing so is the right choice). It's a kind of cuddly feel-good D&S short, if that makes any sense, so I'm still kind of trying to wrap my head around it, but it's well written and certainly brings the erotica factor. Not bad, not bad at all. ** ½

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Steamy and Naughty January 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I truely enjoyed this book! although very short, i was very quick and to the point. While hot and steamy and a good turn on it lacked a good foundation. it was more of a porno so it meant nothing. I did LOVE the ending though.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad March 30, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm not generally a fan of the "Perfect-Dom-who-knows-all-fantasies-without-being-told" trope, but this is a capable version of that story. It's a single scene, set on the anniversary of the two main characters. If you enjoy this theme, this story is worth a read -- especially when it is free.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sexy March 2, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed this book. It's really sweet. I liked the way Owin obviously cared about pleasing Maurina. It wasn't all about him being the boss. I liked the way we learned about the couples' history through the heroine's recollection of their first meeting.

This title totally threw me as to what the story was about. Felt like I was reading '50 Shades of Grey' again. Story was too short and only written about sex.
