5.0 out of 5 stars Elvis 20th Century Gospel at it's smoothest
All these songs are done beautifully. I have had this album and Elvis' other gospel albums since he was alive. His feel for this type of music was real and reveals where some of his musical roots were. He and the quartet have a blend that is somewhere between the Ames Brothers and the Everly Brothers. The songs are fast and slow and all have sweet melodies and hand...

2.0 out of 5 stars For hard core fans only
This collection does have a few positives going for it. First, Elvis is in fine voice. His phrasing, timing and general performance are good. Also, his backing musicians know gospel music. The remastering is done well.
The problem with this set is the material. With the possible exception of "You'll Never Walk Alone," it is all second tier. None of the...

5.0 out of 5 stars Elvis 20th Century Gospel at it's smoothest, May 1, 1999

All these songs are done beautifully. I have had this album and Elvis' other gospel albums since he was alive. His feel for this type of music was real and reveals where some of his musical roots were. He and the quartet have a blend that is somewhere between the Ames Brothers and the Everly Brothers. The songs are fast and slow and all have sweet melodies and hand clapping rhythms. My favorites are "I Believe in the Man in the Sky" (Later released as a single) and "Swing Down Sweet Chariot" and the title tune. There are no filler songs here. If you like really good gospel blended voice style songs, there are no better choices than this. The only others that I would say are this good are Elvis "How Great Thou Art" and "He Touched Me." I've always felt Elvis' true love was Jesus.
Something in his voice conveys the depth and conviction of his religious beliefs. These songs are beautiful and inspiring and have brought me comfort and a sense of serenity. When you consider Elvis's own difficult life, you realize even though we are weak and frail human beings, we can have a rich and rewarding spiritual life. As a line in the title song says, "And if I fall, I know you'll understand." The songs, the voice, the depth of emotion in this cd make for a very personal communication between artist and audience. Elvis at his best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Elvis at his best, March 18, 2006

I've heard Elvis since I was a kid in the '50s but I never appreciated his talent fully until I bought this CD. Everything about it is remarkable. Not only is the singing wonderful but Elvis had a hand in most of the arrangements. The music on most of the tracks is simply produced and sincere to the point of true inspiration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everlasting beauty, September 1, 1998
This review is from: His Hand in Mine (Audio CD)
For more than 20 years this album from the early sixties, has been one of my best acquaintances, and I don't think I will ever get tired of listening to these happily swinging gospel songs. Though not being a religious guy at all this album just keeps on moving me each time I play it, and I can truly recommend it to anyone in search for some quality entertainment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Elvis' first Gospel album, March 11, 2008
Released in late 1960, this was Elvis' first, full length Gospel album. It was a hit in the US climbing to 13 on the album chart and eventually being certified PLATINUM by the RIAA. It was an even bigger hit in the UK reaching 3 on the album chart there. While no singles were immediately released from the album, a few years later Joshua Fit The Battle / Known Only To Him and Milky White Way / Swing Down Sweet Chariot would be released. Swing Down Sweet Chariot would reach the top 10 in Italy in 1962 while Joshua Fit The Battle was a number 1 hit in Sweden in 1966. Both singles were minor hits in Australia in 1966 as well.

While this is an excellent album, there are better Elvis Gospel collections available now, such as his excellent Ultimate Gospel CD.

If you really want this CD, I would recommend you pass on this release and buy the US release of this album instead. It is a lot cheaper and has bonus tracks not included on this one.

I purchased this album on record many years ago, then on cassette tape, now on cd. I love Elvis singing gospel as much, if not more than, his other music. Some of the best gospel music you will hear.
