His Inherited Wife by Barbara McMahon
Harlequin Romance # 3888 - April 2006
Six years ago when Shannon went to work for Morris and Pembrooke in DC, Alan, one of the partners, swept her off her feet. When they married, Alan's brother, Dean and his business partner, Jason both thought Shannon was a fortune hunter. In the weeks before Alan's death, he made Shannon promise to close the D.C. office and move to San Francisco where Jase ran the second office. And he further promised her to not sell her share in the partnership for at least a year. Jase isn't thrilled to have Shannon in the business. Although he did come to realize that she was never a gold digger, he never did get over his own attraction to her. He had purposely stayed away from D.C. because of her marriage to Alan. Seeing Jase on a regular basis, only stirs up feelings in Shannon that she's not ready for. She can't help wondering if Jase would have asked her out first all those years ago if things may have turned out differently.
I liked the "what If" question of this story. Shannon struggles with her need to move on and feels disloyal to her husband's memory because of her growing feelings for Jase. Jase tries very hard to give Shannon the space she needs, but finds that he keeps doing the wrong thing at the wrong time. Both are bound to promises made to a dead man, and those promises keep getting in the way.
