Book Description

From bestselling author, Monica Burns, comes the story of an alpha hero willing to submit, and the woman with the strength to heal his soul.

HIS MISTRESS is "...powerfully done, and the scenes between Tobias and Jane mesmerized me. I loved it!" Joey W. Hill, author of the Knights of the Board Room series.

A sensual, erotically crafted, historical romance, HIS MISTRESS is book 1 in the Self-Made Men series. Tobias Lynsted is haunted by dark secrets, until Lady Jane Grisham becomes both his salvation and the mistress of his soul.

One man’s submission to pleasure

As a solicitor seeking justice for victims of violence, Tobias Lynsted must maintain control at all times while working in the seedy underworld of London’s East End. The darkness of his world creates a need for the intimacy and release he can only find in the forbidden pleasure of submission in the House of Dark Pleasures. The kind of pleasure where a powerful man has the freedom to let go of his control for a few sweet moments of oblivion under the command of a lovely woman. But when a blackmail scheme forces him to marry, the last thing he expects in a wife is a woman who will satisfy the darker side of his nature and make him yield to her command.

One woman’s awakening

Lady Jane Grisham has no desire to marry, but choosing marriage over a life of destitution is an easy choice to make. Although Jane knows love is for the foolish, Tobias awakens her most wicked and darkest of desires, but he’s also a threat to the secret life she enjoys in the House of Dark Pleasures. Her face hidden behind a mask, Jane uses her blossoming skills to make Tobias surrender not only his body, but his secrets as well. But she quickly discovers that the greatest test of her strength is trusting Tobias with her heart.

A passion that overcomes the darkness of the past.

From the Author

As a romance author, I strive hard to make every read better than the last. Writing sexy romance has personal meaning for me due to my surviving sexual assault. Whether I write a dark or light themed book, the ultimate goal is to provide readers with a read that is entertaining, but most of all, illustrates that love is the light that can overcome darkness.

4.0 out of 5 stars Historical erotica battle of wills May 14, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
~Originally published on Buried Under Romance blog~

This is the first historical erotica I've read with medium BDSM elements, and it was rather nicely done. Tobias Lynsted had a dark past, and his work is more like that of a Bow Street Runner than a mere solicitor for the Earl of Culverstone. When the Earl blackmails him into mailing his daughter, Jane, Tobias has no choice but to capitulate else his activities at La Maison des Plaisirs Noir (House of Dark Pleasures) an exclusive club catering to men's wildest desires (usually along the lines of submission-domination, erotic play, et cetera). Neither he nor Jane wants this marriage, yet Tobias's concern that Jane will not understand his dark cravings is about to be proven unnecessary...

Lady Jane Grisham may be an earl's daughter, but she's no innocent in mind or body. Her curiosity has led her to befriend Angelique, the madam of La Maison des Plaisirs Noir, and with the skills she's learned there, she has begun leading Tobias on a merry chase to his submission, as the masked Lady Mystere. Ultimately, will he succumb to her commands? In their battle of wills, will they find something everlasting, and perhaps have a true marriage?

Monica Burns has started her Self-Made Man series with a very interesting hero who is afraid to submit in mind and body. Tobias fears the loss of control accompanying his submission, which could mean death in his line of work. Jane, on the other hand, demands Tobias' submission because it gives her a sense of power, of her own femininity, and also as a way to forget her past surrender to an undeserving man.

5.0 out of 5 stars His Mistress by Monica Burns May 14, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I am fascinated by the juxtaposition of the buttoned-up facade of the Victorian era—this novel is set in 1892—against the uninhibited world of sexual pleasures. “Those uptight and proper Victorians” as my good friend likes to say. They just didn’t discuss such things in Polite Society. One’s foibles, weaknesses, and desires were completely private and, if discovered, meant almost certain ruin, scandal, and possibly even arrest.
Tobias Lynsted is a commoner and a successful solicitor in London’s dangerous East End, with a secret sexual penchant he keeps carefully hidden. So when he’s blackmailed into marriage by the Earl of Culverstone who threatens to reveal his liaisons within the walls of the exclusive La Maison de Plaisir Noirs (The House of Dark Pleasures), Tobias feels he has no choice but to marry Culverstone’s thirty-one year-old spinster daughter, Jane.
But above all else, Tobias is an honorable man who cherishes and protects women. Luckily, Tobias was saved long ago as a little boy by a caring mentor who raised him (and four other boys) as his own sons, teaching him right from wrong and helping him learn a profession. They are his family; I’m curious if there will be future stories featuring Tobias’ brothers?
Lady Jane Grisham has long suffered being ignored by her father and, when he becomes involved with an unscrupulous woman, Lady Irene Hounslow, Culverstone feels Jane is an impediment to his upcoming marriage. Once again, the popular theme of the vulnerability of women is evident here. Marrying her off to Tobias would solve his problem. She has also been ruined, many years ago, by a man who seduced and then abandoned her.

La Maison des Plaisirs Sombres is the premier BDSM club in London, but to enter you must be granted membership by Angélique Bissette. Leather and silk bindings, floggers, whips, feather dusters and ropes are all welcome here. Women and men enter this world to be sexual free and they use domination or submission to achieve it. La Maison des Plaisirs Sombres is their sexual sanctuary, but someone is threatening to rip the veil away and exposes them all.

Lady Jane Grisham became the unloved and unwanted daughter of the Earl of Culverstone, after she gave her power away to a cruel man. To survive under her father’s thumb, Jane has bisected herself into two halves. Her public half is the proper English Lady who wears dull grey dresses, so she will blend into the background of her father’s world. Her private half is the enchanting and mysterious Lady Mystère! At the La Maison des Plaisirs Sombres, Jane welcomes her freedom as Lady Mystère and can dominate any man she choose.

Tobias Lynsted is a London solicitor who champions the poor of the East End. His father’s violence defined him at a young age and he now protects the weaker and helpless. After his parents mysterious deaths, he is saved by John Fordyce and learns about unconditional love. Tobias is raised and educated with four other boys and they all became his FAMILY! To survive is dark past, Tobias needs to set his demons free and he does as a male submissive at La Maison de Plaisirs Sombres. No woman has ever earned his complete surrender, but Lady Mystère does intrigue him.

Tobias is the solicitor for the Earl of Culverstone and the earl’s has a problem with his upcoming marriage to Lady Irene Hounslows. Lady Jane and his fiancée hate one another.
