Elegant book for gifts and meditations,
By
This review is from: His Name is Jesus: The Promise of God's Love Fulfilled (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
This book is impressive when you hold it in your hands. It's not very large for a hardback, but it's got a good weight to it. It's stored in a beautiful case that slides off.
Inside, the pages are full of prose, poetry and contemplations about the life of Jesus. The pages are beautiful to look at, with words artfully and poetically arranged along with regular prose. The backgrounds often include beautiful aspects of nature. As you read, you learn about the life of Jesus and what it meant to the people of his time. It's written in a modern style that could be read easily. There are comparisons to modern life to give more perspective. It's really a wonderful book to read before going to bed and can refocus your life to what's most important instead of the everyday mechanics of living. You could also read it during family devotionals or on the Sabbath after church. It's a real treat to read something uplifting versus the anti-religious material constantly being pushed on everyone. Jesus is my Savior and I love hearing of his perfect example to me, and need all the help I can get to focus on that and live a good life. This book would make a beautiful gift for someone.

Good as gift to those new to Jesus' life,
By
This review is from: His Name is Jesus: The Promise of God's Love Fulfilled (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
As noted by others, this is excellently bound, beautifully illustrated book. It covers the life of Jesus in a more this-day-and-age type of writing than a typical Bible would, and the author also adds some of his own thoughts. The book tells us of Jesus' birth, life, death and resurrection and how his life applies to us today.
The book will probably have the greatest appeal to those who are new to the story of Jesus. For those who already know the story of Jesus' life, the book may not have as much appeal other than for the quality of the presentation of the book itself. For myself, though I think the author's books written for children are incredible, this book did not have quite that much appeal to me. This is simply because I already know the story presented. However, this book will probably rate a 4 or 5 star to many, many people who are just beginning to learn of Jesus and what He means to us today. As a gift to a new Christian or someone who has yet to know the story of Jesus (or a young person), this would be a wonderful choice. The book is produced so well that it would make a much better gift than a typical book would. In fact, it appears this book was produced specifically as a book to be given as a gift as it comes with a presentation case (the hardback version I have anyway) and has a "A Gift for____" "From____" page at the front. And as a gift of a book to someone who loves Jesus, especially a new Christian, this would be an excellent choice.

A Feast for the Senses,
By
This review is from: His Name is Jesus: The Promise of God's Love Fulfilled (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
This gorgeous gift book by beloved Christian author Max Lucado will be a most welcome treasure.
The hardcover volume comes in a sturdy slipcover. There is a page for a gift inscription as well. Each page is a full-color delight of photographs from nature. The endpapers are a rich tapestry of plump, ripe grapes on the vine, ready for picking. There are pictures of deep, blue skies, burning candles, snowy forests, mountains, farms, wheat fields, trees in spring bloom, the ocean, flowers, sun rise and sun set. It is truly a feast for your senses. Interspersed with these glorious photographs are selections from the body of Lucado's work, spanning twenty books and 19 years of writing wisdom. The written selections are organized into the life of Christ - His Birth, His Mission, His Death, His Resurrection, His Legacy. This is a beautiful volume of inspiration. It will be a treasured addition to any library, and a must-have for fans of Max Lucado.

The Best of Lucado's Writing on Jesus,
This review is from: His Name is Jesus: The Promise of God's Love Fulfilled (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
His Name is Jesus is a substantive, colorful collection of Max Lucado's writings on Jesus' life, death and resurrection. The book culls from 20 previously published Lucado books (1990-2007) to provide biographical content for this new book on Jesus. Lucado's writing is always inspiring, imaginative and instructive. This "best of" writing really does bring out the best of his books, and it is all about Jesus.
The format of the book is rewarding, too. Every page is colorful and artful. Several pages have full page photographs appropriate to the verbage on that page. I think more than anything this book is devotional. It would serve very well as a daily mediation on Jesus. Although this book is beautifully crafted, the last thing it should be is just decorative. It would make a great gift book, and one that I would hope would be well-used and not just well-placed. I had read a few of the book's culled for His Name is Jesus, but reading the words in this new format was like reading them anew. Lucado opens readers eyes to the truths of Jesus and our place with him. Craig Stephans, author of Shakespeare On Spirituality: Life-Changing Wisdom from Shakespeare's Plays

Beautiful Book, Both Outside and Inside, With a Faint Aroma of Grapes,
By
This review is from: His Name is Jesus: The Promise of God's Love Fulfilled (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
This presentation-quality book is a joy to read, from its gorgeous slip-cover case, to its rich illustrations. And, am I crazy, but did I detect the faint odor of grapes inside this book which has images of bunches of grapes on the endpapers? I'm not kidding here--three members of my family actually noted the faint aroma of grapes as they leafed through the book. I wonder if this is some unbelievably clever scratch-and-sniff-technology at play here, or if we're all crazy here in my household.
The text consists of meditations, observations, poetry and little homilies about the life of Christ. The background illustrations are beautiful to behold. The style is light and contemplative, for a modern readership with modern challenges, and the invitation is for the reader to find present-day meaning in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. The level of insight doesn't approach A Year with C. S. Lewis: Daily Readings from His Classic Works or All These Things Shall Give Thee Experience, but they are very nicely presented. In this day and age it is a delight to find something as uplifting and unabashedly positive as this book. The message, ministry and Atonement of Jesus Christ is as necessary today as at any time in history.

Jesus Keepsake Book,

This book was a surprise. I expected a theology book, but this is a book of short reflections on the life of Jesus with pretty photos as "wallpaper". It is a gorgeous volume, great as a gift or a "coffee table" book. I rate it five stars for its meditations, but only one star for the conformity of pictures to the subject. Overall I rate it four stars, because its spiritual significance.
The book is organized much like the tourist souvenir books of countries and cities, with photos in seemingly random order. Lucado, however, includes comments and meditations with the lovely pictures. Lucado's contemplations are presented in categories: Jesus' birth, mission, death, resurrection, and legacy. The major flaw with this book is modern photos illustrating ancient spirituality. I realize this is a matter of taste, but I find them distracting from the significant contemplations. Some pictures have modern buildings, others barb wire fences, or roads. One photo includes a distant sail boat. Since it is possible to ignore the fit of picture with thought, I focused upon the realization that Jesus is present in this century as well. Jesus' experiences of being born, His ministry with his disciples, and His mission are all everlasting. But since the most profound meditations are reflections on the actual experiences of Biblical characters, it would be much better if the pictures matched the subject. Several of the reflections are very meaningful. Lucado's meditation on the centurion at the foot of the cross is special. The centurion's thoughts and actions are genuine and evocative. Pondering the centurion's deliberations is like being at the foot of the cross 2000 year ago watching Jesus suffer and wondering why he is so peaceful and forgiving. Mary Magdaline at Jesus Tomb is akin to watching Mary experience the surprise and wonder of the empty tomb. We see Peter in his bewilderment and John in his belief. Max Lucado presents rich meditations on events in the life of Jesus. We contemplate revelations of His love, His complete humanity and perfect divinity. We are present at the temptation in the desert and the wedding at Cana. We behold the miracles and grieve at the suffering of the passion. The meditations are the real value of the book. I would purchase it for its spiritual treasure alone.

His Name is Jesus,
This review is from: His Name is Jesus: The Promise of God's Love Fulfilled (Hardcover)
When I received this book I couldn't help but he impressed by how beautiful of a book it is. This hardbound book is full of beautiful, breathe-taking, landscape pictures. It makes you think of God's creation right from the start. This book isn't one that I would read as a novel but one that I would read in snippets, a great coffee table book. There are many short segments where Lucado talks about different miracles that Christ preformed and delves into his observations of Christ's personality. He shows Christ not only as a God among men but shows the human side of Christ and helps you see how loving and in touch with humanity he really was. It helps you see Christ as someone you can relate too, not just someone to praise, someone who struggled through trials, not just someone who lived life without temptation. We know that Christ suffered all things for us because he loves us but this makes you feel how much be loves you. It is very well written, with poems, Lucado's thoughts, scripture and beautiful art. This would make a wonderful gift. Something to think about with both Mother's Day and Father's Day coming up.

Good introduction to those not familiar with the Gospels,
By
This review is from: His Name is Jesus: The Promise of God's Love Fulfilled (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Lucado's latest book about Jesus is written more for those not familiar with the accounts as found in the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John). Those familiar with them won't find any new revelations here. The childhood, miracles and crucifixion are all explained in an easy to understand manner, with some modern language/phrases added.
The book itself is beautiful. The hardback cover and binding is sturdy and the slipcase is nice, which preserves the cover. The pictures are excellent as well as the poetry and biblical verse references. Overall, it would make a great gift for those new to the story of Jesus, whether they be young or old. Even those familiar would also also enjoy it and it's relatively short length.

This is a really lovely gift book, and I'm planning to give it to my mom for Mother's Day. It's encased in a gorgeous, sturdy slipcase and the book itself has beautiful calligraphy, gold foil type and photography on the cover.
Inside, passages from Lucado's other wonderful books are interspersed with Scripture to present the story of Jesus' birth through death, resurrection and legacy. The photography and typography are really stunning, and remind me of the Timothy Botts books I love so much. I found it was a good book for meditation and devotions, full of great little nuggets to ponder and pray on. I highly recommend it.

Prepare Your Heart for Easter,
By
This review is from: His Name is Jesus: The Promise of God's Love Fulfilled (Hardcover)
There are 20 days until Easter. Is time passing you by in busyness? If you are like me and you need moments to fully focus your thoughts on the reason for this season (See? That quote wasn't just for Christmas.), then I highly recommend His Name Is Jesus by Max Lucado.
Some beautiful excerpts from this book.... "He stilled a storm with one command. He raised the dead with one proclamation. He rerouted the history of the world with one life." "Christ came to earth for one reason: to give His life as a ransom for you, for me, for all of us. He sacrificed himself to give us a second chance." "God remembers the small birds of the world. We remember the eagles. We make bronze statues of the hawk. We name our athletic teams after the falcons. But God notices the sparrows. He makes time for the children and takes note of the lepers. He offers the woman in adultery a second chance and the thief on the cross a personal invitation. Christ is partial to the beat up and done in." People seem to be caught up in anxiety and fear about what is going on around them and in their lives right now, but if we each could exalt God and allow His glory to reign over our land... just imagine! His Name IS Jesus. |
