His Ring, Her Baby....My Heart,
This review is from: His Ring, Her Baby (Silhouette Desire) (Mass Market Paperback)
I've long been a fan of Maxine Sullivan. Her books have emotional depth, riveting characters and a sensual tension that gets me every time. She's an author whom I've watched grow--like a sweet wine that with age, only gets better. This by far is my favorite book that Maxine has written.
When one picks up a Desire, they expect an alpha male--Kirk Deverill is no exception to the rule. He's been branded by his past, but he also knows what he wants from the moment he sees it and what he wants, make no mistake, Kirk gets. Vanessa also knows what she wants--to keep her young son safe. A young widow, she's trying to put the pieces of her life back together. She tries to fight her attraction to Kirk, but with all that electricity in the air, how couldn't they both succumb and go up in flames together? This book had me running with a gamut of emotions. I smiled and even chuckled because of the witty dialogue between Kirk and Vanessa. These characters were two that I gave a damn about--ones that I was rooting for page after page and one I could see myself reading "once more with feeling'. I'm just sorry this story ended and my only hope is that Maxine Sullivan decides to write Jade or Zach Deverill's stories so that I can revisit Kirk and Vanessa.

I have to admit that I love Outback romances. When you combine a gorgeous Outback hunk with a heart-stealing baby, then you can't go wrong! I really enjoyed this story which features a hero whose self-imposed walls are brought tumbling down by a beautiful widow and her adorable son. This is a well-written romance, especially the viewpoint of the male, Kirk Deverill. When he meets Vanessa Hamilton and her son, Josh, then he has met his match in love...and for life!

Sexy and Sensual Romance,

His Ring, Her Baby was a compelling romance, part of Billionaire and Babies series by Maxine Sullivan. A very sensual romance with sparks flying.
Vanessa Hamilton was in a world of trouble. She had lost her husband, had his parents hounding her for custody of her one year old son, had no money and thank God for her cousin who provided shelter for them while she helped them at their motel. Then Vanessa's cousins Linda and Hugh informed her they had sold the motel. On top of that one of the most gorgeous men she had ever seen billionaire Kirk Deverill walked in and when their eyes met it was electric, so much so he asked her out for dinner. Kirk kept asking and Vanessa kept refusing. Just one kiss and he knew he wanted more and then he felt betrayed because he knew she was aware he needed a housekeeper and she was looking for a job and a place to stay. He felt she worked everyone to get what she wanted. Pressured by her cousin Linda, he offered Vanessa and her son Josh a place to stay and a job as housekeeper on his extraordinary ranch located in the Outback and at first their relationship was tense. Gradually Kirk became more involved in Josh's life and felt more at ease around Vanessa but there was always the strong sensual tension between them and he always seemed to be rescuing her. Due to his last relationship he did not to trust women, however with this one, he was drawn in like a moth to a flame. Their passion exploded but Kirk was keeping a secret, one that would keep him from marrying. Her ex-in laws came unannounced and it was obvious to Kirk they were snobs and that had no feelings for Vanessa, in fact they annoyed her and were critical. Again, Kirk felt the need to protect them. And then he took them both on a business dinner dance and their time spent together was magical until the little one became ill. Again her in-laws tried to cause trouble and Kirk again came to the rescue. And then she realized she loved this man who put himself before others. Again due to a slip of the tongue, things came crashing down on them and he made arrangements for her to leave. Would Vanessa wake up and fight for her man? We all love a happy ending and this one will have you smiling at how this beautiful woman and her son found their future together with Kirk, giving them all a chance for a real family. From back cover: The job title was housekeeper, not fiancee! But billionaire cattleman Kirk Deverill couldn't throw the the lovely single mom off his ranch. Especially when he knew the job would help her keep her son. Of course, the eligible bachelor hadn't expected her to tell everyone she was also Kirk's bride-to-be!
He agreed to Vanessa's ruse for her adorable son's sake. And for the opportunity to claim some "husbandly" pleasures. Of course, making their fake engagement a real union was never going to happen. The Outback loner had his reasons and even the most desirable of women wouldn't get him to change his mind. **Spoiler Alert** First of all the book title is misleading. Yes she has a baby. But the only rings mentioned in the story is the wedding ring from Vanessa's late husband. She removes them because the rings become too tight for her finger in the Outback's humid weather. The story does not mention a ring belonging to the hero, so why is it mentioned in the book title and also pictured on the cover? These type of stories frustrate me.I just had to review this book so that other unsuspecting readers would not waste their time or money on this. The hero is very unlikeable. The heroine is a pushover. Kirk starts off flirting with Vanessa as soon as he meets her. Vanessa is manning the hotel reception desk for her owner cousins, but is very rude to Kirk because she thinks he is the new Buyer for the hotel. Kirk asks her out to dinner in the first 15 minutes of meeting her but she refuses even though she finds him attractive. Her cousins arrive back from a trip and Vannessa finds out that they are best friends. Her cousin Linda sets Vanessa and Kirk on a date for the anniversary party they are giving her parents the next night. The emotions between the hero/heroine is so frustrating to read. When he finds out she is a widow, he is angry because he felt she should have mentioned it to him. Why? She met him just the day before, is she obligated to tell him her life story? Later Kirk hears a conversation between the cousins about Vanessa not wanting to return to Sydney because of interfering parents-in-law. Linda gets the idea that Kirk should offer Vanessa a temporary job as his housekeeper, since his present housekeeper is away for 6 months. Vanessa protests, but Kirk insists even though he is so angry because he thinks Vanessa hinted to Linda about this. Vanessa takes the job because she agrees with Kirk in that she would not want Linda to "feel bad or too concerned" about Vanessa refusing the job. Also, Vanessa doesn't tell EVERYONE that she is Kirk's fiancee, as the book description suggests. She tells only the social worker who is checking up on a complaint from her in-laws. She never mentions it to anyone else after that. The hero shows conflicting emotions going from flirtatious to angry to sullen and suspicious all in the span of a few minutes! I can't understand why the heroine would fall for someone like this. Misleading title, exaggerated book description, bad story. |
