2.0 out of 5 stars Borrring....
It's hard to believe that a 16th century virgin of noble birth would be allowed to be alone with any man to whom she was not related - and especially not such a known scoundrel as Alex. Yet Emmaline manages to do just that with Alex, again and again. Alex gropes Emmaline, she goes along with it for a while, then she puts a stop to it. Variations of this scenario play...

4.0 out of 5 stars Timeless battle of the sexes, August 31, 2005
This review is from: His Scandal (Mass Market Paperback)
After living his twin's life for a year and a half, Sir Alexander Thornton has returned to his courtier's life. However, the pleasures of Queen Elizabeth's court have grown pallid compared to the challenges of overseeing his brother's estates during his masquerade. In an attempt to end his ennui, Alex and his best friend Edmund Blackwell wager that each will be the first to steal a kiss from a virtuous lady of the other's choosing. Edmund chooses the Lady Blythe Prescott, a daughter of the Marquess of Kent. What the rogue didn't count on, however, was Blythe's older sister, Emmeline.

Lady Emmeline Prescott has resigned herself to never marrying nor raising a family. Now, she is determined that her sister marry her perfect match. Sir Alex Thornton is definitely NOT Blythe's perfect match. He is too experienced, too scandalous and too handsome for his own good. Sir Alex is trouble and Emmeline is going to prove it, even if she has to follow him everywhere. From tavern carousing to bear baiting dens, the rake finds himself shadowed by the determined spinster. Soon, Alex finds himself obsessed with Emmeline rather than Blythe, and Emmeline finds herself with a chance for happiness after all. Will she dare to risk all to get it?

With HIS SCANDAL, Gayle Callen continues the story of the Thornton brothers which began with HIS BETROTHED. This diverting tale is a classic battle of the sexes made all the more interesting by Alex's flashes of vulnerability and Emmeline's blossoming spirit. The story moves along at a brisk pace with additional storylines that set the stage for the final story in this trilogy. With its vivid portrayal of Elizabethan life and the simmering sensuality of its main characters, HIS SCANDAL is a tale to savor.

4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable light read; starts off prosaic and lacking spark but *quickly* improves!, January 16, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: His Scandal (Mass Market Paperback)
[1588, England] This book is the second in Gayle Callen's "His" series; Book 1 is His Betrothed, which features Viscount Spencer Thornton (the brother of this book's hero, Sir Alexander Thornton) and Book 3 is His Bride, whose hero is Sir Edmund Blackwell, Alex's best friend. I have not read the first book but was easily able to follow the plot, so it's not a problem if you read the series out of order.

I read His Scandal six years ago and didn't remember the book but thought I had liked it, so thought to reread it. I was at first somewhat disappointed: the story starts off without much of a bang and seems pretty prosaic, with the plot coming off as contrived (it - and Emmeline and Alex's relationship - being driven by the ridiculous wager between Alex and Edmund). The main characters are a pleasure and the book quickly improves though, so if you start off thinking the same thing, don't be discouraged - keep reading and you won't be disappointed!

Despite the often vapid and silly younger sister, most of the secondary characters are interesting and well-written and the chemistry between Emmy and Alex is sizzling. And of course, who doesn't enjoy a historical romance where the hero is a scandalous rake who can't help but fall under the spell of an older-sister heroine who is too often ignored ... until the hero finally sees her for the intelligent, unusual, beautiful, and wonderful woman she is? ::sigh::

MAIN CHARACTERS, Emmeline and Alexander:
Lady Emmeline Prescott has always been in her younger sister, Blythe's, shadow - though over time this has become as much by outside influence as by choice. Regarding her younger sister almost as a daughter (they are 7 years apart), Emmy has practically raised her and sees it as her duty to look after Blythe and help her find a suitable husband who will love and care for her. Around seven years ago she once fancied herself in love with a young man, but he was a tutor and her father forbade the match, not thinking him to be of a suitable station. Since then, Emmy has given up on ever finding her own HEA and has convinced herself that she will be content with being a beloved elder sister and the aunt to Blythe's children.

Emmy is a great heroine; she's strong and intelligent, kind and passionate, and definitely very easy to root for. She's suspicious of Alex's attraction to her, unbelieving that he could actually like anything about her - and once she admits that he desires her, she cannot imagine he feels anything other than lust. She finally realizes that they both need each other and can make each other happy and she - somewhat forcefully and surprisingly - takes matters into her own hands.

Preceding the story, Sir Alexander Thornton spent ~2 years pretending to be his elder identical twin brother, while Spencer was in Spain spying for Queen Elizabeth (they didn't want anyone to know he was gone, so Alex pretended to be Spencer and every now and then reverted back to himself so that no one suspected either twin was missing). The role he played as Viscount Thornton was far different from that of the Viscount's scandalous younger brother, but Alex found himself surprisingly at ease - and happy - managing estates, exploring new and innovative engineering techniques for the farms, and writing bills in the House of Lords. Once his brother returns, however, he is relegated to the scandalous younger brother role again: society fawns at the heroism and courage displayed by Viscount Thornton, but Alex is looked down upon and somewhat shunned for having misled everyone; people who used to court his favor and listen to his opinion now no longer care to have anything to do with him.

Alex is a much deeper character than we initially think; he plays the role of easy, charming, devil-may-care rogue who only cares about finding pleasure and scandal and nothing else, but we quickly see that though that is one side of his character, it is also a kind of mask he hides behind. His appreciation of Emmeline rings true and their relationship, though definitely involving flirting and *hot* chemistry, also evolves into a wonderful friendship. Their exchanges and sparring are great fun to read and Callen includes several laugh-out-loud moments. All in all, they are delightful characters and a perfect match - they both feel overshadowed by their siblings, underappreciated and undervalued, yet Emmy sees more in Alex than just a scandalous rake who seeks pleasure with little regard for anyone/anything else, and Alex sees more in Emmy than the rigid older sister of a young beauty who wants nothing to do with men and has given up on a life of her own.

COMMENTS (criticism and praise):
~ Great sexual tension and chemistry, as well as well-written dialogue and verbal sparring, between the hero and heroine
~ I like knowing characters' ages and we aren't told anyone's - the only thing we know is that Emmy is 7 years older than Blythe
~ Blythe, Emmy's sister, is a pretty flat and boring character for most of the book, though she starts to show promise towards the end; other than that, Callen has wonderful secondary characters (especially Maxwell, Edmund, and Spencer)

4.0 out of 5 stars Callen, once again, delivers., January 13, 2004
This review is from: His Scandal (Mass Market Paperback)
Alex Thornton is back in London and bored. He decides to spice things a little by challenging his good friend Endmund Blackwell to a little harmless wager. They must find a maiden to kiss...and only to kiss. Of course they choose for the other the maidens that they thought would be the most difficult to get a simple kiss from. But Alex is surprised that his good friend has just choosen Blythe Prescott a very flirtatious girl...until he meets her sister, and then he understands that to get to Blythe Prescott he must first charm Emmeline Presscott, a plain spinster.
Funny thing is that Emmeline amuses him more than Blythe does. That is until Alex realizes that the plain spinster is not plain but beautiful and witty and smart and charming and... Now he just can't get her out of his system. But he must fight hard to keep his feelings and lust at bay becuase he is only a sencond son ( even though they are twins) and has not much to offer. He also has many scandals under his belt and he has decided that he does not want to marry anyone...too bad Emmeline has him thinking differently latetly. Emmeline with her dresses that cover all of her luscious body, Emmeline with her wit and charm. Emmeline with her innocent kisses full of passion.
And worst of all, Alex is blinded by jelousy every time a man comes near her.
To complicate matters Emmeline is also terribly attracted to Alex despite herself. And he is making her feel something, not even the poet that used to court her, made her feel.
Through out the book we uncover Alex and Em and their passions and secrets. It is a wonderful story full of wit and charming moments. Although the storyline seems simple enough and done already, Callen has a way with words and accomplishes her mission to captivate her readers to this fantastic romantic tale. So far this is my favorite of the trilogy and it was the only one I bought because I thought "I might as well read it since I already read 1 & 3". Definitetly not dissapointed but actually surrpised at how much I liked it. Very tender story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not all bets are straighforward..., September 30, 2002
This review is from: His Scandal (Mass Market Paperback)
The story starts out with Sir Alex placing a bet with his friend Sir Edmund that they could get a kiss from someone the other chose. This is apparently what happens you have bored ton members. But what Sir Alex doesn't count on is his chosen mark's sister Emmaline. Emmaline has decided spinsterdom is for her mostly due to her fathers sly manipulations, and she is going to see her sister wed well. Well Sir Alex has quite the reputation and she sets out to make sure that he doesn't interfere with her sister and at the same time feels quite an attraction for him herself. There is also intrigue, talk about twins, service to the Queen, and even some misunderstandings. It is a fun story to read and follow how the "opposites" attract.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Elizabethan treasure, May 26, 2004
This review is from: His Scandal (Mass Market Paperback)
This was my first book by Gayle Callen, but it won't be my last. I loved this book! I admit I was a little leery of the Elizabethan setting, but Callen's writing makes it come alive with amazing approachability.

Alex is a marvelous hero: gorgeous, tortured, hiding his hurts and broken dreams behind a laugh and a devilish smile. He's just out to steal a kiss from Emmeline's sister in order to win a bet, but he has to get past the big sister first...only to discover how intriguing she is. Then he only wants to make her see her own worth, until he realizes her can't get enough of her. Emmeline is an excellent heroine as well, thinking herself undesirable and living to see her sister well-married, but quite capable of standing up to Alex, until she begins to realize that she's falling under his spell.

Callen delivers, with plenty of laughs, emotional depth, and intrigue, plus well-developed secondary characters. And the chemistry between Alex and Emmeline sparks right off the page. Great book!

4.0 out of 5 stars very good despite inaccuracy....., April 16, 2008
This review is from: His Scandal (Mass Market Paperback)
the other reviewers have covered the books' synopsis well so let me just add a few points. Miss Callen has obvious talent as I really enjoyed this Elizabethan romance despite some fairly big inaccuracies and weaknesses.

I agree with reviewer Holly Golightly-for the time period the heroine would have been ruined if she'd been left in an unmarried mans acquaintance for even a few moments-much less overnight! This was just one of many historical flubs that diminished the story. Also-there was way too much groping and "foreplay" scenes between the leads, and not enough regular interaction. It was too much "sexy" and not enough "reality". The reader doesn't really even find out about the leads motivations and "non bedroom" personalities till the last 70 or so pages.

All that being said-the author still writes a good enough story that I stayed with the book to see how the story ends. If we would have had a little more accuracy and interaction between the hero and heroine I would have said this was a five star book. Even with the flaws, I'll give it a 4 star grade and my recommendation.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Page Turning Romance, May 29, 2002
This review is from: His Scandal (Mass Market Paperback)
Set during Elizabethan England Gayle Callen's latest novel is attention grabbing book.

The characters are likeable and the storyline is fast paced with plenty of sexual tension between Alex and Emmaline (The Hero and Heroine). I was really sucked into the time and place and really believed that I could see and smell everything that Ms. Callen wrote about. A must read for any romance reader.

4.0 out of 5 stars thrilling Elizabethan romance, May 1, 2002
This review is from: His Scandal (Mass Market Paperback)
In 1589 London, the Ton praises Viscount Spencer Thornton for his work as a spy. His job helped the English defeat the Spanish Armada. At the same time, the aristocracy holds his younger twin Alexander in contempt for masquerading as Spencer even though that enabled his sibling to stay safely undercover. His so-called friends refuse to speak to him and Alex misses estate management and Parliament. He feels the only thing he is good at doing is causing scandals.

A bored Alex bets Edmund Blackwell that he can obtain a kiss from a virgin first. Alex selects Elizabeth Langston as Edmund's target while the latter chooses Blythe Prescott as the former's sacrifice. Alex flirts with Blythe, who is guarded by her spinster older sister Emmeline. To his shock, Alex finds himself dreaming of Emmeline rather than Blythe who now seems so young. Soon Emmeline concludes that Alex purposely projects the image of a wastrel. She has seen his kindness and decides to marry him, but must take things into her own hands if they are to wed.

HIS SCANDAL is a thrilling Elizabethan romance that is superb when the lead protagonists are on center stage. The fast-paced story line is filled with delightful support characters that amplify the understanding of the lead couplet. Though a subplot involving attacks on Alex takes away from the main tale, Gayle Callen renders a strong tale that complements her previous novel HIS BETROTHED starring Alex's twin and leave her audience anxiously awaiting the final tale in the trilogy.
