A film every Christian should see,
By Lost in Twilight (Albany, OR) - See all my reviews
This review is from: In His Steps (DVD)
"In His Steps," is based on the 1896 novel of the same name by Charles M. Sheldon. I have not read the book, although I certainly intend to after seeing this film, so I cannot say how faithfully it follows.
The premise of the film is the inspiration of the origination of the popular modern day question, "What would Jesus do?" It follows a group of Christians, including an aspiring actress and a newspaper publisher as the main characters that accept their pastor's challenge to seek a deeper relationship with Christ, and ask themselves, "Is there more to Christianity than faithfully attending church and being a good person?" I would be giving nothing away in the film by telling of this group's discoveries to the faithful few that already know, but I want to ensure my review is not omitted due to "spoilers." While I believe all Christians should see this highly inspirational film, it should be said that those inspired will likely only be people that are already Christians. Concerning film quality, it's not bad for 1964, and although I do not know this for fact, I would venture to say that it was funded and produced by a church group, because I just can't see Hollywood doing it, given the depth of the subject matter. "In His Steps," falls short of a perfect rating because I felt there could have been much more depth to the characters, and how their renewed commitment to Christ affected their lives and those around them (the film's run time is only 1 hour and 13 minutes). Also, while it did not affect my rating, I feel the story presented in the film desperately needs to be updated to present day, but the message is still there, powerful and true. The film's key verse: "Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that we should follow in his steps." 1 Peter 2:21.

Glimpses of True Christianity,
By
This review is from: In His Steps (DVD)
An excellent Christian film which calls those who claim to follow Christ to lay down the pretense and seek to truly walk as He walked. A rebuke to the lipservice seen so often in "Christians" today.
I'm sure the book was excellent, but this film should be judged on its own merit, not compared to the book from which it originated. If you long for a deeper walk, take the message of this film to heart. God bless.

I have been searching for this movie for a long time. I had it on vhs and loaned it to someone and it got lost. Every time I watch that movie it reminds me of what the christian life is suppose to be like. I used it for ministering to other people. Great item to buy. If you are a christian this is the movie that will make a difference in your spiritual life.

Poor Filmography, Disappointing Rip Off of the Book,

This review is from: In His Steps (DVD)
Everyone in my circle of friends who have both read the book and viewed the DVD are more than a little disappointed with the film. It leaves out a lot and the theatrical presentation completely misses the points and lessons that most of these readers take away from the book, whatever those were, reader by reader.
If you like the classic book then don't waste your time on the DVD. Don't buy the DVD thinking you'll get any insight into the book. The Technical Quality of the film was terrible before it was made into a DVD. The acting, the heart of the presentation after all, is that stiff, forced, unconvincing reading of the script that one gets in the first read-through from a bunch of high-school students organizing to put on the school play. It should be much better in a week or two ... All in all I suspect that the DVD is counter-productive to the effort of calling anyone to follow "In His Steps." Buy the book instead. It's cheaper. It takes a little more time but it is a very good read and is very much worth the time spent doing it. |
