5.0 out of 5 stars Divine Healing - the whole picture, August 7, 2000

This review is from: By His Stripes: A Biblical Study On Divine Healing (Paperback)
Very readable book - short chapters (24 chapters in about 190 pages) with appropriate subheadings in the text. The chapter "Causes of sickness" includes "Recognizing the enemy" "The works of the Devil" "When God allows sickness" "Natural causes of sickness", and "Sickness as a result of mental stress". Chapter 22 "Healing through faith" includes "What faith is" "Importance of faith to healing" "Whose faith is necessary?" "Demonstration of faith" "Faith for what?" "Faith in what?"

Jeter doesn't make wild statements without substantiating them: the book is full of scripture references - even where he quotes examples we are probably all familiar with, like Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:1-11). The section headed "The works of the devil" (as a cause of sickness) mentions "Many of the healings of our Lord were effected by rebuking a 'spirit of infirmity' or casting out demons. (See Mark 9:22-24; Matthew 12:22; Luke 4:38, 39; 13:11; Mark 5:1-20.)"

Jeter gives a balanced view - he doesn't blame Satan for every cough or sneeze, neither does he conclude that all we should do to be healed is pray and believe. Another quote: "Although in the final analysis sin is the cause of sickness and death, we must not conclude that sin is directly responsible in every case." In the chapter "About doctors and medicines" Jeter says that it is not OK to discontinue medication if you have been prayed for WITHOUT LOOKING AT THE FACTS to see whether you have actually been healed - and that might include a return visit to a physician for an examination. Some people make the mistake of assuming they have been healed without looking at the evidence - this, he says, is not faith but presumption.

The book includes study questions for each chapter - referring to the text specifically, with page references. There is also an index at the back - very useful for reference purposes.

This is a book I will probably use for the rest of my life.
