Book Description

November 1, 2002
Konrad Reichmann, an outstanding product of Hitler’s youth movement, becomes disillusioned as the reality of the Russian front bears no resemblance to the "glory" of the Third Reich. Even lower than his unit’s morale are supplies and fuel as Russia’s winter is unleashed against them. When the slaughter of innocents opens his eyes to the true nature of the Reich, Konrad embarks upon a bold and dangerous plan to change the course of history. Can he avoid the trap set for him?

About the Author

Being a student of history, Jack Cavanaugh has always been fascinated by the forces that have attempted to destroy Christianity throughout the ages. The stories of those who have endured such severe persecution has inspired him in his Christian walk.

Not only does he enjoy reading the stories of martyrs and reformers, but he loves telling their stories. It is his goal as a Christian novelist to transport his readers back in time so that they can see what it was like to live as a believer in a different time and place. It was this overall goal that led him to Germany in the 1930s. The result is a journey back in time to the 1930s to the home of a young pastor, his wife, and a youth group that is being trained in the ways of the Third Reich through a growing youth movement; the series, SONGS IN THE NIGHT. Book 1 of this series, While Mortals Sleep, won a Christy Award.

A popular inspirational speaker, he holds a degree in history from Grand Canyon University and an M.Div. from Southwestern Seminary. Jack and his wife make their home in Southern California.

More About the Author

A student of history, ancient languages and myths, Jack has taught history, sociology, and writing on the college level.

Now a full-time novelist, on most days you'll find Jack's body in his 3,000 volume library reading and translating and writing, but his mind and spirit are not there. If you're looking for him, you might try Narnia; or Middle Earth; or Mars; or ancient Ephesus; or galaxies far, far away; any time in the past, present, or future.

In the evenings, Jack returns to his body where he lives with his wife of 38 years in Southern California.

I've read the first two installments in the Songs in the Night series. Both were excellent reads, with Under His Watchful Eye being even better than the first. I couldn't put it down. As a library director, I have recommended to many of my patrons and nearly everyone has rated it a ten! I'm waiting for the third book to come out this year...hopefully.

5.0 out of 5 stars Man of War - Man of Peace, October 2, 2009
This review is from: His Watchful Eye (Songs in the Night Series, Book 2) (Paperback)
It's been three years since the events of While Mortals Sleep. Josef Schumaker and the Hadamar Six are living with Josef's wife Mady, and Lisette, one of the youth from Josef's now former church. Konrad and Neff are now part of the Waffen SS, a feared elite group of the Nazi machine. Konrad is an expert sniper and Neff is his spotter and photographer. Gunter Krahl, their captain, likes photographic evidence of the kills. Konrad's loyalty to the Third Reich has been shaken. Reality does not compare to the grandeur of the Hitler Youth movement. And so he turns his back on it all, deserting his company, forming a dangerous plan.

With the help of Josef, he comes to peace with his past. But the past will not let go of him. A trained killer stalks Konrad and he will use anyone or anything - including the Hadamar Six - to get to him. Things get more complicated as it becomes obvious that the Schumaker's must flee or be captured by the invading Russians. But when all hope is gone, an ultimate sacrifice will bring salvation.

Unlike a normal trilogy, this book serves as more than a bridge to the third book. Instead it is able to stand alone and give a compelling story of one man's search to find peace.

I love this book. It was so easy to get caught up in everything that was happening, and I couldn't put the book down until I had finished it. I highly recommend it.
