I've read the first two installments in the Songs in the Night series. Both were excellent reads, with Under His Watchful Eye being even better than the first. I couldn't put it down. As a library director, I have recommended to many of my patrons and nearly everyone has rated it a ten! I'm waiting for the third book to come out this year...hopefully.

5.0 out of 5 stars Man of War - Man of Peace, October 2, 2009
This review is from: His Watchful Eye (Songs in the Night Series, Book 2) (Paperback)
It's been three years since the events of While Mortals Sleep. Josef Schumaker and the Hadamar Six are living with Josef's wife Mady, and Lisette, one of the youth from Josef's now former church. Konrad and Neff are now part of the Waffen SS, a feared elite group of the Nazi machine. Konrad is an expert sniper and Neff is his spotter and photographer. Gunter Krahl, their captain, likes photographic evidence of the kills. Konrad's loyalty to the Third Reich has been shaken. Reality does not compare to the grandeur of the Hitler Youth movement. And so he turns his back on it all, deserting his company, forming a dangerous plan.

With the help of Josef, he comes to peace with his past. But the past will not let go of him. A trained killer stalks Konrad and he will use anyone or anything - including the Hadamar Six - to get to him. Things get more complicated as it becomes obvious that the Schumaker's must flee or be captured by the invading Russians. But when all hope is gone, an ultimate sacrifice will bring salvation.

Unlike a normal trilogy, this book serves as more than a bridge to the third book. Instead it is able to stand alone and give a compelling story of one man's search to find peace.

I love this book. It was so easy to get caught up in everything that was happening, and I couldn't put the book down until I had finished it. I highly recommend it.

I don't think Jack Cavanaugh can write anything that isn't worth reading. the novel is historical and yet very on the edge of your seat fascinating. I would recommed anyone interested in what took place during WWII to read this series of 3 books by Jack Cavanaugh.

4.0 out of 5 stars Suspense, but not an unbearable amount!, August 11, 2011

I really enjoy reading Jack Cavanaugh books. This book is the second in this series. I read it just a little each day and it was easy to remember it even though my reading was choppy. The suspense was just the amount I can handle. I am looking forward to reading the third book. I don't have it yet.
