Elizabeth Merriman works hard to live a quiet life, support her beloved Aunt Deliah, and contribute to society by training poor young women to become competent maids. But her serene life is turned upside down by a scandal from her past. Fearful of her secret's exposure to polite society, Elizabeth's stress is enhanced by the involvement of the wickedly handsome Lord Chandler.

Chan finds himself pursuing the illusive Miss Merriman initially as a favor to his childhood friend. But he soon finds himself fascinated by the spirited beauty and seeks a way to help her and her family as well as his chum. As Chan and Elizabeth's friendship advances, their attraction to each other is undeniable. Will they be able to overcome the seemingly insurmountable odds to find the love of their lives?

Pat Cody's delightful sense of humor and deep regard for romance can be found sprinkled generously throughout this charming book. Her love scenes are sensual, but sweet; her hero kind and gentle; and her heroine brave but stubborn. I thoroughly enjoyed this book! This is the first book by Pat Cody that I have read and would gladly go out and get another. I was immediately drawn into the characters feelings and was held enthrall throughout the entire book. She made it easy to understand all of the characters feelings no matter what they were feeling. The way that Chan tries to be the mediator within all of his collection of friends, the hurt that Elizabeth and Ash are trying to deal with and work through, the way Lady Enfield tries to convince Elizabeth why she did what she did, you are always left with the same feelings that the characters are feeling. When they cried, I cried. When they laughed, I laughed. When they were angry, I understood what they were angry about but also why they should be angry and what other feelings they were having. I couldn't put the book down until I was finished.

This is Pat Cody's third Romance novel. I have her first book and now wait for each book. There is spice to give the plot and the characters believability. She skillfully expresses the attitudes of that time through language and descriptions of streets and roads.

I, too, miss her Scottie from 'Kept by a Countess' and hope to see dog characters in her next book.

If you enjoy strong heroines, compassionate heroes and memorable characters, this book is for you. Pat Cody has a real talent for putting emotions into words and evoking the same feelings in the reader. Her depiction of the Regency period brings the setting to life, complete with flimsy gowns, tight pantaloons and peculiar social mores. No contrived gimmicks or time-worn plot lines here. The central characters have true, believable conflicts with each other and within themselves. As rich a drama as any on the stage, this is one story you won't soon forget. Now if Pat could have only included another amusing Scottie... (Catch her best pooch in "Kept By A Countess" - a keeper from her backlist.)
