His Word In My Heart:: Memorizing Scripture for a Closer Walk with God,
By
This review is from: His Word in My Heart: Memorizing Scripture for a Closer Walk with God (Paperback)
This is one of the best books I've ever read about memorizing scripture. It not only is a practical guide, but the author makes it very clear that it's not just memorizing, but it's knowing the Word and thus knowing God more intimately. I highly recommend it!

I really enjoyed this book on memorizing Scripture. It was a fast read and very well written. Janet Pope didn't just write a simple "How-To" book, but rather she writes from her life experiences, which makes her message all the more penetrating. Through trials and tribulations, Janet Pope tells how meditating on and memorizing the Word of God strengthened her and helped her grow in her relationship with God. God bless her, and may he bless you too should you commit yourself to the wonderful and rewarding spiritual discipline of memorizing Scripture!

Recently, I spent a few days fasting and praying to help me hear God as I made an important decision. I left that time with a deeper desire to just know God. After evaluating my spiritual practices and lack of time to do much more, I felt that memorizing Scripture consistently would give me the opportunity to meditate on God throughout the day. As a teen, I had memorized chapters of the Bible for competitions, and I grew a lot through the time I spent in the Word.
I bought the book hoping it would help me as I started memorizing again. I loved how she emphasizes that the purpose of memorizing is to develop a closer walk with God. It's not about becoming the Bible know-it-all or even to have the perfect verse for other people just when they need it. It's just to help you spend time meditating on God, allowing Him to speak to you. While dealing with such spiritual topics, the book is also very practical. She gives tips on where to memorize, what to memorize, how to prepare your materials to help you memorize, and so on. She suggests a verse a day, and she shows through her life how easy that can be - reviewing while you're in the shower, driving to work, or waiting for your kids at school. The book includes a day-by-day guide through memorizing a few Bible chapters, in which she asks questions and makes points about what the passage teaches to help you get in the habit of really meditating on the Word and not just memorizing it. The book is geared to people who have little experience memorizing and meditating on the Bible, which is good. It's also written as if everyone reading it is a mother. As a result, I didn't read every word or use her suggested chapters, but I found a lot of inspiration and some great tips in the book. Regardless of where you are in your walk with God, this book will inspire you and give you a number of practical ways to make memorizing and meditating on Scripture a part of your life.

I heard Janet speaking on a radio program one day and was so intrigued by her testimony and work that I went to the website and ordered her book. I am now preparing to buy copies of the book to give to others, including my pastor. I am a person who thought I COULD NOT memorize Scripture. I could remember things from the Bible but certainly not in context, nor the location. Other reviewers have commented on the struture and practicality of the book - I agree! I have started and stopped the book several time - simply getting past my own road blocks. I am always drawn back, though, and the honest text is like a beacon pointing into the Word. I have just begun following her suggestions and I can already agree that the Lord certainly does speak clearly and often when you look into his Word for this purpose. He makes me laugh, makes me cry, and always draws me closer. Thank you, Janet Pope for writing from the heart!

Just the encouragement I needed!,
This review is from: His Word in My Heart: Memorizing Scripture for a Closer Walk with God (Paperback)
Moody Publishers sent me, free of charge, this book to review on my blog.
I read it every morning after my devotions, and it didn't take long to get through it - it was so engaging I didn't want to put it down! In the book, Janet tells her story - how she was getting a little ragged around the spiritual edges by dint of spending more time driving her kids all over creation than spending time with the Creator. She wanted to remedy the problem, but she didn't want to sell her kids, so she decided to memorize Scripture so that she could meditate on it day and night! In her book, Janet talks about a few good reasons to memorize scripture. "No, the Bible does not command us to memorize Scripture. But here are some of the commands and exhortations we do find: Know God's Word. Remember His Word. Do not forget His commandments. Have His Word ready on our lips. Meditate on His law day and night. Dwell on Christ's words. Store up His words. Keep God's Word within our hearts... Memorizing is never the final goal, it is only a tool to help us reach the ultimate goal of knowing God and loving Him." This book could not have come at a better time for me - what encouragement it is to be soaking up Scripture, pounding it into my brain, devouring this good meat as I prepare for my husband's departure to the Navy! If you want to borrow my copy you may, but I would recommend eventually purchasing your own - I wrote all over this book! Using the method she describes in the book, I made myself a little spiral-bound set of notecards began memorizing. I was a bit nervous. I thought I might not actually memorize anything. But ... So far, within the last few weeks, with diligent exercise and discipline, I have memorized Psalm 1 and the first chapter of Titus. I am bound and determined to have the rest of the book of Titus memorized before long! I have never been able to memorize or remember even the simplest things (ask Mr H, he'll tell you it's true!). Memorizing Scripture isn't something I take lightly; and it isn't something that comes naturally or easily for me! But it can be done. Mrs H [...]

The author writes in a non-confrontational way. She shows a genuine delight in the Word of God and wants to share it. Her plan (which she says is by no way the only way for scripture memory) adds a new verse every day, but for those like me who struggle a little, is easy to adapt to your own pace. I'm a few verses in and loving it so far!

The book is very insightful and easy to read. It provides a simple, yet practical means to memorize scripture/'Hide God's Word In Your Heart'. Janet Pope's teachings are a nice reminder that 'I can do all things through Christ' and 'not be conformed to this world but to be transformed by the renewing of your mind. I have purchased six copies of the books; one for me and five for gifts. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking a closer relationship with the Lord and desiring to grow in grace.

This book is wonderful for teaching yourself how to memorize scriptures. I was able to use the principles in this book to memorize scriptures. Her ideas are simple and practical. I am a mom of three young ones, yet I was able to start memorizing God's word by using her strategies. Thanks for a wonderful book! We all need more of God's word in our hearts so we will not sin against Him!
