I just finished reading By His Wounds You Are Healed by Wendy Horger Alsup. It is a Bible study about the book of Ephesians for women. I have been challenged to think about many things as I've gone through this study.

Before I talk about the rabbit trails I wandered along, I want to share what I think about this study. It's a really good Bible study. It's laid out a little differently than other studies I've done, though. There are 35 lessons that would take about 15-25 minutes each. It depends on how much time you spend in prayer or reflecting after the lesson. The length of the lessons vary from 2-5 pages. I am not a good at reading recipes all the way through before I begin them and I'm the same way with books. With this book, make sure you look through it first. There's an introduction, then the lessons with space for reflection after them. After the 35 lessons, there is a section with 1-3 questions for each lesson--which are worth doing. Some Bible studies are primarily a commentary with a few personal questions. This is that kind of study. There are other studies like Cynthia Heald's and Tim Keller's studies that are less commentary and are primarily questions. Both kinds of studies have their strengths.

The greatest strength of this study is also something that may not make it easy for a lot of women to connect with the author and this study. Let me explain...most women's books are written by feelers for feelers. A good example of what I think of as a feeler's book is Let Go by Sheila Walsh. Many women see life through an emotional lens rather than a logical lens. Men tend to be more logical in how they see things. But, there are many women who see things in between or more on through more of a logical than emotional lens.

this study of ephesians has been a very practical study and personal help in my life. not the typical "pink fluff" that most women's bible studies end up being, this book addresses both deep and difficult issues without being overly wordy or hard to comprehend. while many female christian authors choose to stick with discussion of women in the bible, wendy branches out in realizing that all of scripture is beneficial in the christian woman's life. i absolutely love her writing style, practical approach and blatant honesty in this book.

this study is an overview of the central themes in ephesians, and is not meant to be a fully comprehensive commentary on every singe verse. it is suitable for personal study, but could also work beautifully in a group. many of the questions addressed would lead to great group discussion.

wendy's study of ephesians has left me both encouraged about my identity in christ, and at the same time, exhorted me to acknowledge and work on sin in my life. the great amount of scripture used by the author is refreshing, and the practical application leaves the reader with a clear understanding of how the gospel of grace can truly transform a woman's life.

regardless of your age or situation, this book is sure to be an encouragement and guide for you. i highly recommend it and am so thankful i read it.

I'm so thankful for this book. In the past, I read and studied sections of Ephesians. Until I read this book, I didn't realize how important it is to read Paul's letter as a whole. Reading and discussing this book with sisters in Christ transformed the way I view grace and how live out the Gospel. Through it, I gained a greater understanding of who I am in Christ and what He purchased for me on the cross. I now better understand that I am equipped to walk boldly through any circumstance in life utterly dependent on Christ. I really appreciate Wendy's honest, straghtforward writing. She allows herself to be vulnerable, which encourages me to be honest and vulnerable too. Though the book has deep theological content, it is not too difficult to understand. The book challenged me to new thinking. I'm so thankful to know that there is a way to approach sin and expose it without sinful anger and without ignoring it. I plan to read the book again and have recommended it to several friends.

This book is so well written and in a way that has been very applicable to my life. I love Wendy's humility and willingness to so openly share her struggles and weaknesses. I never realized how central to the Gospel the message in Ephesians is. It is the Gospel message in a nutshell. I have learned so much from this study, I will re-read this book on a regular basis. I have also ordered two more books as gifts for my mom and sister.
