Dr. Lourdes Ferrer introduces her many years of experience as an educator and parent in addition to her research and expertise on Hispanic academic achievement. She lay out a clear framework in an interesting and easy to read format. This work is of utmost importance to school districts pursuing success for their students during current and growing high demographic changes and high stakes testing. Dr. Ferrer highlights the importance of parental involvement in student achievement and success by introducing ten important competencies Hispanic parents must understand and implement. A must read for all educators interested in accelerating parental involvement for a growing Hispanic population.

I am Stephen H. Garlington MSW, LCSW and Education Consultant. I have had the good fortune of working with Dr. Lourdes Ferrer in the education area for over 3 years. As an African American colleague, we have had many vigorous debates regarding the impact of both African American and Latino parental involvement on their children's academic achievement There is much to be said. In her first book, Hispanic Parental Involvement, she makes a clear and provocative argument for how Hispanic parents can get involved and make that all important difference in their children's education. I especially like the chapter on "The Family Divide". Dr. Ferrer explores this phenomenon in a straight-forward and heart-felt way; leaving the reader with new insights and collateral emotional experiences. She amplifies the readers' understanding of the challenges Hispanic parents face as educational advocates trying to navigate the American education system. After reading her book, I am inspired by her writings and personal investment in this inspiring new book. It's a great read, it's great cause.....it's a book whose time has come! I have worked with Dr. Lourdes doing video production on several occasions. She's an amazing communicator in her workshops and seminars. The studies she has done with Latino Students have given her insights which which just make sense. What is truly amazing is the way Hispanic parents respond and the changes they make in their parenting as a result of being exposed to the 10 competencies in this book.
