This review is from: Histoire de L'Indochine (Paperback)
Although titled "History of Indochina", this book is not a history of Indochina during the colonial period but specifically a history of the French in Indochina during the colonial period. The author explains at the outset that the French colonization of Indochina was "a love affair between two peoples" -- and it just gets better from there, peppered with phrases like "Asiatic duplicity", with hagiographic descriptions of the French "discoverer" of Indochina, etc. I suppose the book is interesting as a study of modern French attitudes towards the colonial period, but as a history book it is racist, untrustworthy and useless. It's a bit dated -- I think the original might have been written in 1983 -- but even still . . . |
