5.0 out of 5 stars The best Histology book that I've found.

3.0 out of 5 stars Histology: too much text
I agree with the first and second review. I use this book as a reference for hard-to-understand concepts. As a first year med student, however, I never really have time to refer to it because it is too content-dense. I would prefer a book with more pictures; perhaps just a picture section with pointers on important points.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Histology book that I've found., October 8, 2007
This review is from: Histology: A Text and Atlas: With Correlated Cell and Molecular Biology (Histology (Ross)) (Paperback)
This Histology book is the most thorough and well-written text out there. If you have no background in Histology, this book can be quite intimidating because it is content-rich. I was very overwhelmed when I first started with this book for undergrad, but now that I have gotten through it and read other titles for med school, I believe that this book is the best. It teaches Histology in a way that prepares you to be a real pathologist, using mostly light micrographs and tons of clinical correlations. Other Histology texts (e.g. Color Textbook of Histology: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access) treat the subject as a general learning tool rather than as a core component of your potential specialty. They use more (and less-detailed) illustrations and electron micrographs with fewer clinical correlations and light micrographs.

Still, I would be hard-pressed to recommend this book to medical students if the book was not already required. It is probably more detailed than any medical school Histology course will be, and as a med student, your time is everything! Your time will probably be better spent in gross. Still, if you know that pathology is something you are interested in, this book is a great introduction to Histology and will better prepare you for your career than any other text.

4.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive text, December 11, 2007
This review is from: Histology: A Text and Atlas: With Correlated Cell and Molecular Biology (Histology (Ross)) (Paperback)
This is an excellent text for medical histology. I have read this book cover to cover twice and highlighted the heck out of it. My opinion is that if you know this book, you will know general medical histology. At times the material is much more detailed than you will need to get through your Histo course, but it is well worth it for developing a greater depth of understanding. The book has excellent microphotographs and illustrations throughout, so you won't be left wanting when the text gets really dense. Be forewarned though, this book has numerous errors. Most of them are small (like typesetting, spelling, and figure labels) but others are more fundamental mis-statements (or perhaps misleading statements) about molecular mechanisms and processes. These problems do not take away from the value of the text however, since the more significant errors are usually in the minutia and may just be a product of the publication lagging behind our evolving understanding of different processes. I would definitely buy and read this book again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good - For a reference Title, November 5, 2006
This review is from: Histology: A Text and Atlas: With Correlated Cell and Molecular Biology (Histology (Ross)) (Paperback)
This book is good in its essentials. But for a course, I woulde suggest you go for a simple book with more illustrations. Its so crammed up with information, you wont be able to recognize which is important which is not. Unfortunately the authors have produced a detailed encyclopedia of histological processes in Molecular Biology, that this one cease to exist as a simple textbook for a course in the medical school. The type set is very hard to follow, you would stray away in minutes.

I give four star credit for this book since I value its contents as a reference guide for histology and the immense amout of work the editors have put on this marvellous piece.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Text, December 9, 2009
This review is from: Histology: A Text and Atlas: With Correlated Cell and Molecular Biology (Histology (Ross)) (Paperback)
Understanding histology, especially histology of diseases, is essential for success in medical school. I found the chapters on the immune system organs to be most helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book!, February 12, 2011
This review is from: Histology: A Text and Atlas: With Correlated Cell and Molecular Biology (Histology (Ross)) (Paperback)
This book has absolutely fantastic illustrations. If you have more time on your hands, you can read each chapter from beginning to end (text is wonderful); if you have less time - as is probably the case if you are in medical school) - then just go to the end of each chapter and study the "plates" (large photomicrographs) and their concise descriptions - this will give you enough info to do excellent!

In-text illustrations are also wonderful, and have very good, clear captions.

Also, I like the pathways/physiology diagrams and various tables in this book, and have used them throughout med school.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dense, but Decent, October 13, 2010
This review is from: Histology: A Text and Atlas: With Correlated Cell and Molecular Biology (Histology (Ross)) (Paperback)
I like histology, but this text just didn't match my learning style.

Pros:
1. The cd was a little useful, but don't get your hopes up. It's the same "plate" images provided in the text with an ability to enlarge them.
2. Organized fairly well.
3. I haven't found many errors

Cons:
1. Too dense. Honestly there is considerably more information provided in this text than what's needed in medical school.
2. The text also lacks any type of end of chapter summary/review or quiz questions.

I am currently taking a Histology class and this is very helpful! There are many pictures and diagrams that have helped in identifying certain structures, etc. I go to it almost everyday. I highly recommend it!
