5.0 out of 5 stars ONE OF BEST MEXICAN ROCK BANDS
"Caifanes" was the most important band on the 90's in MEXICO. They were on the top on a new rock movement with "Fobia", "Soda Stereo", "La Cuca", "Maldita Vecidad" and "Cafe Tacuba", this box set contains the most representative sogs of the group, and some other live versions on MTV unplugged. Excelent for you...

5.0 out of 5 stars LO MEJOR DE LOS MEJORES, September 27, 2002
By
Daniel Rivera (Los Angeles, California United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: La Historia (Audio CD)
CAIFANES: LA HISTORIA is an anthology of some of the best songs by Mexico's legendary band, Caifanes (now named Jaguares). Arising during a musical renaissance of Latin Rock in the 80s with bands such as Soda Stereo, Fobia, Maldita Vecindad, among other giants, Caifanes have proven to be among the most influential and talented to this day.

LA HISTORIA includes the most significant compositions from each era in the band's history, such as "Matenme porque me muero" and "Viento," which are reminiscent of The Cure, along with the Cumbia mega-hit "La Negra Tomasa," a staple in Latin parties and album collections. Disc 2 contains the songs from their most artistically vibrant stage, once they fully incorporated their Mexican heritage and its pre-Columbian mysticism, seen in "Afuera" "Aqui no es Asi" and "Miedo", and "Piedra" among other wonders.

Saul Hernandez' voice has changed according to the band's different musical incarnations and has demonstrated alteration from his many throat operations (he has suffered from complications to his voice box for the last ten years), yet fits perfectly with the band's evolving style. The drums and guitars are fascinating as they evoke an age long past, when man was more connected with the elements of nature and his spiritual being. LA HISTORIA belongs in every music lover's collection for its testament to the development of Latin Rock and innovative, beautiful music. A MUST-HAVE.

5.0 out of 5 stars Before Jaguares, there was Caifanes..., November 26, 2004
By

This review is from: La Historia (Audio CD)
This CD collection contains the bulk of Caifanes' 5 albums between 1988 to 1994 including some tracks from their "MTV Unplugged" performance. You hear the band's roots in new wave music, esp. The Police (lead singer Saul would later record a Police song with Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland as well as doing a one-off show with them) but over time they had their own unique sound.

Whether as Caifanes or Jaguares (which started off as sounding radically different and harder rock but wound up going back to their "Caifanes" roots) a lot of the songs are flat out strange or shamanist... They refuse to do a "English crossover" type CD and continue to maintain a devoted following, but even if you don't understand the words, the music is rhythmic and hooks you in. Some people will bring up Mana (either to compare or as rivals), but their styles are very different.

The song people who don't understand Spanish may recognize is "La Negra Tomasa" from the "Selena" movie.
They had also toured with Morrissey and have been on Jay Leno as Jaguares. Some of the other songs ("Viento", "La Celula Que Explota", "No Dejes Que...", "Afuera") are crowd favorites at Jaguares concerts. Unless they (MTVUno which occasionally will show an old video or Telemundo) happen to be showing an old Caifanes concert, there has yet to be a live concert CD or video released. However, the good news is that Jaguares' live/studio 2 CD "Bajo El Azul De Tu Misterio" contains some of the songs from this collection and can get a taste of the direction they've gone in since the mid 90s.

I think it would be great to see the videos from the Caifanes era as well as the "Unplugged" concert on DVD in a future reissue if they ever decide to to one.

If there was a CD that you wanted to hear what "rock en espanol" is, this should be one of the first purchases, if not THE first.

4.0 out of 5 stars great copilation BUT...., October 21, 2006
This review is from: La Historia (Audio CD)

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Mexican Rock Band Ever, June 29, 2000
By
This review is from: La Historia (Audio CD)
Caifanes (now Los Jaguares)is, without a doubt, "the" best Mexican Rock Band ever (period). Ranking up there with the cream of the cream of the Spanish rock bands(Enanitos Verdes, Soda Stereo, Mateos, etc.)Caifanes are the Mexican heroes who rescued spanish rock from becoming extinct. Rescuing us from the horrid "balada-pop" we were fored to digest for decades. Exiting, sensual, lirics and musical influences fron British New Wave, classic rock, fused with latin rithms and sounds. Caifanies must go down in history as the best (and maybe the first real) Mexican rock band ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars This album is absolutely incredible...., May 13, 2003
This review is from: La Historia (Audio CD)
Caifanes is the best rock en Espanol band, period. Historia was my first taste of Caifanes and I'll tell you right now, you don't need to understand a word of Spanish to appreciate and notice this undeniable talent. "No dejes que" and "matenme por que me muero" are some of the standout songs on this collection, but every song has a distinct quality, beauty and charm to it. And even their early work from the late 80's/early 90's proves that their music was way ahead of its time. Overall an impressive, enjoyable piece of work. A masterpiece.

5.0 out of 5 stars Los Chingones del Rock En Español, March 8, 2001

This review is from: La Historia (Audio CD)
