Mario Vargas Llosa es mi escritor de ficcion favorito. He leido varias de sus novelas y esta, "La historia de Mayta", es la mas que me ha gustado desde "La ciudad y los perros". La trama de esta novela (La historia de Mayta) es muy original; trata de un novelista que investiga un suceso historico protagonizado por Mayta, un revolucionario de izquierda. El novelista entrevista a diversos personajes que conocieron a Mayta e, inclusive, lo apoyaron en su intentona revolucionaria. El capitulo final es la entrevista con Mayta, el protagonista de su novela. En esta novela se tocan diversos temas de la realidad politica, economica y social de Peru. Tambien se destacan varios temas de caracter universal sobre la naturaleza del ser humano. Con obras como esta Vargas Llosa se hace acreedor de un Nobel de literatura.

Prior to reading this I had thought of Vargas Llosa as a writer more clever than profound. However this book reveals a author at the peak of his powers. It digs deep into challenging and provocative ideas, using a narrative technique that adds depth to and complements the plot. Right up to the last few pages it keeps forcing you to question and reevaluate what you believe within and about the story. One of my favorite books and, in my opinion, easily his best.

The book is a challenging one and at the beggining one might get lost in its complexity. It is at the end that one realizes the message that Vargas LLosa is conveying. I read the original version in spanish.
