Book Description

September 30, 2008
Historic images lead the reader through old Berlin and its famous landmarks from the former Stadtschloss to Schloss Charlottenburg, with an historic overview providing an introduction to the now unified city. The book's main focus is the Imperial Period from the formation of the German Empire in 1871 until the end of the First World War in 1918. Old photographs and historic city views help readers understand today's lifestyle and current trends in urban development.

5.0 out of 5 stars Historic Berlin, August 1, 2009

This review is from: Historic Berlin (Hardcover)
I wanted to see what the city of Berlin, Germany looked like during the years spanning the formation of the German Empire (1871) and World War II. This book does the job. The author provides excellent b/w photographs of many of the legendary Berlin buildings/parks/plazas/monuments from this time frame. His descriptions of each historic Berlin site are concise and well written. The author also included comments about the amount of destruction most of the historic sites received during World War II and comments on whether or not these sites have been rebuilt or demolished since then. The only negative which I find is the book does not include a map of Berlin so the reader can immediately identify the location(s) of the historic site(s). All in all the book is well worth reading.
