They are as American as apple pie and provide towns around the country with a chance to brag about themselves once a year. These are the festivals, fairs, celebrations, and other events that are such an important part of the fabric of America. The author has done an outstanding job of collecting information on more than 250 of them. Cantor gives the background and reasons for each festival as well as points of contact for more information. He wisely avoids dating his book by listing only the general time of the year that festivals are held, rather than specific dates. His book is a treasure-trove of arcana and minutiae, making it a delight to read just for the fun of it, as well as providing an impetus for one's next vacation. The attractive price makes it suitable for all general libraries, even if they have Santino's All Around the Year: Holidays and Celebrations in American Life (Univ. of Illinois, 1994).
