Award Winner!

This book integrates language arts and social studies with motivating projects that take students from ancient times to the future and give them opportunities to present their research and thinking in a variety of ways, including stories, posters, plays, letters, speeches, brochures, and newspaper articles. Each attractive student page includes background information and/or samples along with detailed assignment guidelines. The book attempts to reach all types of learners and lets them creatively express themselves in writing, artistry, drama and many other areas. They work on each project either alone, with a partner, or in a small group.

This book presents lessons that begin in ancient civilizations and end in the future, with a strong emphasis on American history. Many of the lessons can be used or adapted to several different historical periods and present a varety of different options. All lessons require students to complete some kind of research, sometimes with a specified time frame, but more often than not, simply background information on the topic.

There are also clear directions for teachers to accompany each page, listing materials needed and the time in history that the project involves.

About the Author

Joyce Stulgis-Blalock taught both elementary and middle school students in private and public schools for 34 years. She received a B.S. in Education from Carlow College, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She did graduate studies at Penn State University also in Pennsylvania.

She believes that children learn and retain knowledge longer if they apply their knowledge in a ìreal lifeî situation or in a ìhands onî approach. This philosophy led her to write ìHistoric Happenings,î published by Dandy Lion Publications. It is a book of Social Studies/Language Arts projects in which the children research an historic event, and produce a project that is then presented to the class. The project may involve writing a skit, developing a brochure, writing a newspaper article, illustrating a travel poster, or writing an historic diary, etc., etc.

She has had several other books published by Mark Twain Media, Inc. and distributed by Carson Dellosa. In 2003 a book entitled ìMath Projectsî was published. It is written in the same format as ìHistoric Happenings,î and based on the National Math Standards. Then in 2004, she published a series of math game books by Mark Twain. These games were based on the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Math Standards.

Finally she wrote and designed 14 math posters based on the 10 National Math Standards.
