1.0 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting, July 19, 2005
This review is from: Historic Houses of the Hudson Valley (Paperback)
This book does not do the homes it features justice. The images are depressing, they are all bad b/w on cheap paper, other than the sickly color image on the cover. I purchased two copies, one was to be gift, but it was so bad I gave them something else.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get yourself a hard-cover version for great pix!, August 17, 2009

This review is from: Historic Houses of the Hudson Valley (Paperback)

I couldn't believe the panning review, but I own one of the older *hardcover* editions of this delightful work. My copy's pix are warm and evocative, and the knowledgable text adds greatly to the atmosphere that you imbibe from this survey.

PLUS the early Bonanza Press hardcover versions are a HUGE 9-1/4 x 12-1/4 with heavy teal-colored cloth covers (mine lacks a DJ); the paper is a heavy, quality semigloss mellowed white; and there are neat maps on the front and rear endpapers!

In sum, this title is a must-have for "old house" book collectors, particularly of the Northeast region.

A Southern counterpart really worth obtaining, by the way, is J. Frazier Smith's super-classic "White Pillars: Early Life and Architecture of the Lower Mississippi Valley Country" (which includes marvelous pen drawings by the author) -- see my review for details....
