I was surprised to get a phone call today from my father, Joseph Shiro Smith, age 79, in Clarksville, Tennessee, who called to say, "There's a picture of your great-grandfather on sale on Amazon.COM."

Shiro Tsurusaki was a high society figure in Washington, DC, serving as steward and chef to 4 US Presidents and the Vanderbilt family. He's buried in Arlington National Cemetery near the Civil War section. My father has pictures of him other than those posted on the web. He died of pneumonia after traveling and being recalled into service out of retirement. A very large article on him can be found in the Washington Star at the time of his death, 1936.

During a trip in February, 2012, to Japan, I attempted to locate more information on him unsuccessfully. We do not know the prefecture in Japan in which he was born. The family suspects he was born on board a ship traveling to the US in the 1880's. We do know that he married a French woman. She may have come into the country by way of Ellis Island, but no research has been undertaken to validate this fact. Like my father, my brother still carries "Shiro" as his middle name. My grandfather's daughter "Josephine Hanna Smith" is buried in Ft. Lincoln Cemetery on the Washington, DC/Maryland line. She died circa 1955 at the National Institutes for Health with only one surviving child, my father, Joseph Shiro Smith.

I am very curious to know why and for what reason these photographs made their way into Amazon for sale. Please email me at attention William J. Smith, San Francisco, CA. Nonetheless, THANK YOU! It's a proud moment for my family to see him recognized for his service to the country.
