Film Shows Szell in Great Form, December 7, 1999
This review is from: Historic Telecasts 2 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Growing up in Cleveland in the 60's, I can still recall attending Cleveland Orchestra concerts conducted by George Szell. Although many local telecasts of Szell/Cleveland Orchestra concerts were made during this time, none of that footage remains. The Bell Telephone Hour video, now available, is a fine production, but the camerawork concentrates on Szell's face; you can't see his conducting technique. Happlily, this excellent film from a televised Chicago Symphony concert shows Szell in great form, and there are many long range shots so you can see him at work. I highly recommend this film to anyone who is a Szell fan. The Chicago Symphony's performances are brilliant.
