Ulysses S. Grant and William Tecumseh Sherman are two of the most important leaders of the Union army during the American Civil War. This documentary is a tour of the important locations associated with these two leaders. In the first half of the video we visit the battlefields of Chattanooga, Shiloh, and Vicksburg. In the process we learn about Grant's persistence and determination in these battles. The second half of the video focuses on Sherman's strategy of total war as we tour Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield, Atlanta, Andersonville Prison, and Savannah, Georgia. The significance of the role of the railroads is emphasized in this portion of the video. Guides and historians accompany host and narrator Bill Boggs at the various locations. I use this video with my eighth grade students during my Civil War unit and have found it to be an effective teaching tool.
