Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Described as “a new perspective on the history of the West,” this atlas offers more than 600 maps showing the history and development of the American West. The author states that he sees this reference as a supplement to historical texts. The maps are almost exclusively contemporary to the events that are being depicted, beginning with early examples drawn completely from the imaginations of European cartographers, long before anyone from Europe had explored any part of North America beyond the eastern seaboard. Libraries that own Historical Atlas of the United States, also by Hayes and published in 2007, will recognize the format. Within a basic chronological arrangement, chapters explore topics such as the gold rush, the transcontinental railroad, major cities, tourism, water projects, and more. Among the maps are those created by early explorers, railroad companies, and real-estate developers. Modern maps vary from painstakingly accurate government maps to whimsically drawn guides to vacation spots from tourist bureaus. The maps are intriguing, and the accompanying text and captioned illustrations provide enough detail for the casual reader and context for the researcher to use in conjunction with other texts. An appendix lists the sources for the maps pictured. The reasonable price makes this an attractive choice for public and academic libraries. --Elaine Lindstrom

Hayes continues to put a whole new slant on the topical "historical atlas", which was generally non-existent during the two centuries these have been produced. Sure, plenty of reproductions of "old maps" exist, but never within the context of a particular subject or topic. This has always puzzled me. We all know that it takes 10,000 words or more to fully reproduce the information on a map. And that all maps reproducing a political situation rarely reproduce the contemporary political or social (or artistic) context, and older maps are "guessing". Hayes blasts away at these limitations.

I have no idea how one man can produce so many atlases with such artistry and intellectual perception. DOES DEREK HAYES REALLY EXIST? Or is he an archetype conjured up by a consortium of ambitious, aggressive publishers?

It's great to have something really new and exciting in historical atlases. I've been waiting 20 years for this -- ever since the wonderful Facts on File series, which, however, lacked Hayes' unique focus. May his tribe of atlases increase.

This book, though excellent according to its true lights, is not an atlas of the US West. It's a book about the maps made of that region, profusely illustrated. A cartography fan would enjoy it, and *some* westward-expansion buffs.

A star off because the title of this fine book is seriously misleading. You will *not* open this book and find an answer to a geographical or exploration question, although, if you sit and read it straight through, you may well hap on some valuable information relating to your interest in westward expansion. It should be titled:

" European and Euro-American Cartography of what is now the United States."
