Once you get past the misleading title--it's not really an atlas, but an illustrated history--
the book is a remarkable achievement, covering the full saga of North American railroad history
in a readable format, with maps and photos integrated into the next (unlike some more extensive
--and much more expensive--volumes) Exceptionally high quality printing on superior paper (in
Singapore) adds to the appeal, although type size is a little small. For the price at which it's
currently available, can't be beat.

I have owned The Historical Atlas of North American Railroads since September 30, 2012. I am impressed with the rich history that this book describes of north american railroads from the 19th century to the railroads of today. The book has excellent black and white and color photos, illustrations and railroad maps. The book also displays illustrations of the mid 20th century railroads that merged into the super railroads of today. I like the current paperback edition that gives recent updates to north american railroads of today. I recommend this book to railfans and to those people interested in history of north american railroads.

There are many complaints about sloppy editing of the 2008 hardcover edition of this book in the Amazon reviews that several people posted for that edition. This softcover edition from 2011, very handsomely produced on high-quality paper, is described as an "updated edition", not just a reissue of the 2008 hardcover. I tried to find in this book the inaccuracies listed by the reviewers of the hardcover, but I could not locate the maps or text for most of them, and the page numbering also does not correspond to the earlier edition. There has apparently been some substantial reworking of the contents of this edition, but I cannot verify whether the errors of the earlier edition have been corrected. One reviewer criticized the photographs as looking grainy and like they had been just pulled off the internet. While I haven't seen the hardcover edition for comparison, this softcover update has absolutely beautiful illustrations throughout. There are a few (very few) old grainy photos that appear to have been reproduced from newspapers of the period, but I presume they were chosen for their particular historical interest, and so they are what they are. I'm not a knowledgeable train buff, so I can't speak to the accuracy of the text, but I'm enjoying this book immensely, especially as it combines so many different aspects of its subject: history of North American transportation, development of the railroads, history of the various railroad companies themselves, social history of each period, economics of transportation, and more. This is a generously-illustrated overview of its subject aimed at the general reader. As it is a nearly 400-page, large format (7.5 by 9.5 in) book printed on very heavy stock, I think it is amazingly inexpensive.
