A wonderful book. I'm not convinced it is completely historically accurate as it lacks references and emphasises the most scandalous aspects of its subject matter. I doubt any of the material is invented, but am sure the author has picked and chosen the raciest sources. The story of the nymphomaniac murderess Frances Howard is a good example of this. However, still enourmously entertaining, so much so I ended up buying 2 more copies as gifts. It covers everything from ridiculous aspects of social history (corsets, wanton women taking over bloomers, arsenic in sweets and the 'poisonous' potato)to sadder episodes in modern history such as Idi Amin. It brings history to life in a way that makes it hard to put down.
