Book Description

0810849348 978-0810849341 March 29, 2004 Second Edition
This Second Edition gives the reader easy access to the history and contemporary situation of one of the world's ancient civilizations. The heart of the work is more than 350 entries on the most influential political figures and events, religious groups and movements, economic sectors, social institutions, and cultural facets. The second edition includes nearly 100 entirely new entries and updates on 43 entries from the first edition. An important difference between the two editions is the inclusion of many more entries on social institutions, such as the family and coffeehouses, cultural aspects, such as art, architecture, cinema, literature, music, and theater, and economic facets, such as inflation, corruption, the public sector, and efforts at reform. There is also expanded coverage on Syria's political dynamics, with entries on human rights, civil society, and security forces.

The only specific reference work in English, this new edition addresses profound changes in Syria's domestic and regional circumstances. The domestic political scene witnessed a major transition with the passing of Syria's ruler for 30 years, Hafiz al-Asad, and the unexpectedly smooth succession of his son Bashar as new president in 2000. The regional situation has changed even more since the first edition came out in 1996. Peace talks with Israel collapsed in 2000 and three years later the United States invaded Iraq, beginning an occupation of Syria's neighbor for an indeterminate period, with incalculable consequences.

In addition to the A to Z dictionary, the second edition contains a chronology that presents fairly general information on early centuries and becomes quite detailed for the most recent years. The bibliography also reflects significant changes in research on Syria. Not only does the bibliographical essay highlight important new monographs, it introduces the reader to credible Internet resources for guides to travel and popular culture as well as news and statistical data at major international organizations'

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

This volume is part of the publisher's Historical Dictionaries of Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East series. Commins, a professor of history at Dickinson College in Pennsylvania, lived in Syria for two years and has written extensively on the region.

There are more than 350 entries in the second edition of the dictionary, over 100 of them entirely new. A majority of the new entries focus on the cultural institutions of Syria. There are articles explaining the Alawi and Druze faiths, which play a large role in Syrian politics. Other entries cover literature and art, still others the coffeehouses and other aspects of Syrian daily life. Entries are very readable, imparting a respect for the country's history and explaining details with an apolitical view.

The dictionary provides excellent coverage of historical figures as well as people and communities within current-day Syria. Entries are supported by an introduction that surveys Syrian history from ancient times, through the caliphates and Mamluks, to the period of Asad family rule. Other features include a helpful chronology and an extensive bibliography. Two maps show the administrative regions of Syria and land use.

Like other volumes in the series, this one provides an authoritative and succinct overview of the history of a nation about which many Americans are ignorant. It would be a good addition to academic and large public library collections. Steve Stratton

Review

Syria, one of the most important countries in the Middle East, has undergone tremendous change since the 1st edition of this valuable reference work, the only volume in English specifically devoted to the country....Because Syria is little known and has not had extensive coverage in the news, most libraries probably will consider a $70 reference book on the country a low priority. This would be unfortunate. This very fine reference work should be acquired in all large libraries with full coverage of Middle East reference tools. (Arba )

The latest in this excellent series...articles are accurate, clearly written, and concise...Recommended. All collections. (Choice )

...an extensive resource that allows the reader to reference Syria's past and present. (Middle East Journal )

Praise for the first edition: The thoroughness of his work in this historical dictionary is among its more noteworthy traits. Every public and undergraduate library should own this dictionary..... (Mesa Bulletin )

Don't be fooled by the title -- this book was a real page-turner. A more complete, concise history of Syria has yet to be written. And when it is, I'm sure it will be Commins' own revised edition. It's a hard subject deftly handled with precision. Should be required reading in all history courses.

You will not find a better cure for insomnia anywhere else in the Middle East History section if you're not a scholar. If you are a scholar, then this book will make you an insomniac! An extraordinary piece of literature, the best Historical Dictionary in the series. The depth of research and coverage of the many facets of the Syrian identity in terms of geography, culture, and politics are adeptly covered in this gorgeous book. Brilliant authorship.

2.0 out of 5 stars Historical Dictionary of Syria., July 26, 2001
Commins has taken on the heroic task of writing a one-man reference work, and it's proven a bit much for him. Many entries merely scratch the surface, retelling well-known information without providing insight or new information. Others are severely out of date. The bibliography cites no travel book after 1980, thereby missing, among others, the estimable Syria by Coleman South in the Cultural Shock! series (London: Kuperard, 1995). The story of Mustafa Tlas, Syria's current defense minister, ends with his taking this position in 1972. The biography of Ma`ruf ad-Dawalibi closes in 1962, ignoring his many active years since. The entry on `Alawis fizzles out in 1960, just on the eve of their taking control of Syria and, for the first time ever, their becoming power brokers. Information on the Greater Syria ideology ends in the 1950s, missing entirely the successes of Hafiz al-Asad in this domain. Likewise, the Syrian Social Nationalist Party also terminates in the 1950s. The history of Alexandretta ends way back in 1939, just as Syrian irredentism began.

Another problem concerns Commins' tendency to shade information to fit his views and biases. In some cases, this means presenting supposition as fact, for example, asserting that in October 1990, "In a gesture of gratitude, the United States gave Syria the green light" to bring its Lebanese opponents to heel. In others, this means questioning well-established facts, such as his dismissal of Syrian support for the PKK organization as "allegations."
