Book Description

Historical Dictionaries of Religions, Philosophies, and Movements Series February 15, 2002
Despite its relative simplicity, which is one of its virtues, Shinto is a sophisticated religion with many aspects that deserve study. This comprehensive yet convenient guide to the key terms and names of this tradition will assist researchers, students, and the general reader to gain deeper insight into its nature and workings. Picken identifies the principal historical and mythological names that are central to the Shinto tradition and also demonstrates the relationship of Shinto to Japanese culture as a whole, including the relationship of Shinto to Buddhism, sex, death, ethics, Noh drama, and Folk Religion.

Not only are entries included on new religions that have a clear basis in Shinto culture and the new development of Shinto's growing internationalization but leading figures are identified as well as some of the core beliefs of these groups. A large list of research resources is appended in addition to books and articles dealing with Japanese religions in general. Also includes a list of websites and the addresses of organizations that can be contacted for further information.
