Book Description

0810857731 978-0810857735 August 11, 2008
Native Americans in the United States, similar to other indigenous people, created political, economic, and social movements to meet and adjust to major changes that impacted their cultures. For centuries, Native Americans dealt with the onslaught of non-Indian land claims, the appropriation of their homelands, and the destruction of their ways of life. Through various movements, Native Americans accepted, rejected, or accommodated themselves to the non-traditional worldviews of the colonizers and their policies.

The Historical Dictionary of Native American Movements—through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on important persons, places, events, and institutions and significant political, economic, social, and cultural aspects—is a useful reference on topics dealing with key movements, organizations, leadership strategies, and the major issues Native Americans have confronted.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

This volume in Scarecrow Press’ Historical Dictionaries of Religions, Philosophies, and Movements series is designed to provide students and scholars with easy access to a wealth of information on primarily North American Native movements. The authors are professors of history at Fort Hays State University, Kansas.  The straightforward dictionary contains entries on topics dealing with major issues confronting Natives, key movements, organizations, leaders and important figures, leadership strategies, and laws and legislation. The authors have also included information on some cultural topics, for example, Lacrosse and Medicine bundle. Although the focus is primarily on Indian-led movements, there are also entries for some important organizations founded by non-Indians, such as the American Indian League (AIL), which was organized in New York in 1910 to promote economic development on reservations. Each entry varies from a paragraph to seven or eight paragraphs in length and contains cross-references. There is no pronunciation guide, and there are no illustrations in the body of the work, although there are nine small black-and-white photographs after the introduction. The extensive introduction provides an excellent overview of Native history as well as information about major unresolved issues, such as mismanagement of trust-account monies, court decisions that challenged Indian sovereignty rights, gaming operations, and problems of contemporary reservation life. The work also includes a chronology, a list of acronyms, a map of Native American movements in the U.S., an appendix containing six primary documents, and a lengthy unannotated bibliography, which includes electronic sources. This will be a useful addition to materials on Native Americans. The text is accessible and appropriate for academic and large public libraries. --Dona Helmer
