Book Description

This nineteenth volume in the African Historical Dictionaries series is devoted to Zambia -- a country whose south-central location on the African continent makes it an essential link between independent states of Central, East and West Africa and southern Africa region. Its crucial political position has made it vulnerable to many pressures, especially in view of its long-time economic and communication links with Zimbabwe.

The second edition of the Historical Dictionary of Zambia has been thoroughly updated for the 1990s. All entries from the previous edition have been revised and rewritten for greater accuracy and intelligibility, and new entries provide information on current literature and authors, popular music and radio, AIDS, and other health-related issues. The authors have expanded the coverage of Zambia's colonial and Federation eras, as well as information on the rural Copperbelt, and added informed entries on Zambian archaeology. With map and bibliography.
Review of the Previous Edition:
"An excellent guide on the Republic of Zambia..." --BOOKNOTES

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

It has been 10 years since the second edition, part of the publisher’s Historical Dictionaries of Africa series. Primary author Simon, a specialist on the country, gives valuable perspective on Zambia’s history, colonization, national identity, and current problems. Entries cover persons, places, events and institutions, and political, economic, social, and cultural topics. They vary in length but are generally one paragraph. The entries are accurate, and the writing is clear and balanced. The 84-page bibliography is extensively subdivided and current through 2007. A solid work for advanced students and specialists. --Arthur Meyers --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

Review

...well-researched...all libraries. (Choice )

...recommended for libraries with an interest in African studies. (Arba )

Une bibliographie de 85 pages...en fait un outil de travail de premiere importance....Bon travail collectif. (Marches Tropicaux )

...terms are dealt with succinctly and accurately...for new entrants to the study of Zambian history this publication will clearly be of enormous benefit... (Africa )

...a valuable resource for students of the region. (Journal Of African History )

...this is a superior reference work...generally user-friendly, and written well enough that it may be browsed for pleasure...libraries and Zambianists should acquire it .Most importantly, the Historical Dictionary of Zambia looks much more like history as practiced today, and like the country Zambians themselves recognize. (International Journal Of African Historical Studies )
