Book Description

September 30, 2000 0313306478 978-0313306471

This encyclopedia contains the biographies of over 100 women, from Clara Barton to Oprah Winfrey, who come from diverse backgrounds, races, age groups, ethnicities, religious backgrounds, and geographic locations. From 1776 to the present, these women have initiated organizations; taken human, physical, and financial risk in these endeavors; and have had an economic impact locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. This, by definition, makes them entrepreneurs, the same as their male counterparts. However, many of the women have been unacknowledged by recorded history. This book, therefore, adds women's entrepreneurial stories to the historical record and provides a resource to researchers and educators in the fields of entrepreneurship, business, management, sociology, economics, and women's studies. It also will be of interest to young women—potential entrepreneurs—seeking role models for their own endeavors in the free enterprise system of the United States.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A seminal work providing rare and precious insights in the transparent' world of creative genius, perseverance, and courage inhabited by the women whose lives, challenges and triumphs Dr. Oppedisano weaves in such a fine and crisp fabric. I expect the book to become standard reference in a number of programs on entrepreneurship as well as women in business and women in technology around the country and the world....I hope this will be the first of a series of works of such high caliber and value-added by her and others in this field."-Elias G. Carayannis Associate Professor of Management, Technology, and Entrepreneurship School of Business and Public Management The George Washington University

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book - fabulously written!, December 14, 2002
This review is from: Historical Encyclopedia of American Women Entrepreneurs: 1776 to the Present (Hardcover)
I am making a promise to myself now that when I am a history teacher I will be using this book throughout the years to enrich my students' historical knowledge. There is no other book on the market like Oppedisano's Historical Encyclopedia of American Women Entrepreneurs. It is a fabulous book dedicated to female entrepreneurs who greatly contributed to American society throughout the past three decades. I have learned so much from this book, and you just want to keep reading on and on, from one woman's story to the next. I highly recommend it to everyone. It's also a wonderful tool for research.

5.0 out of 5 stars LONG OVERDUE, April 30, 2001

This review is from: Historical Encyclopedia of American Women Entrepreneurs: 1776 to the Present (Hardcover)
A wonderful book celebrating a segment of our population deplorably overlooked. It is a concise and reader-friendly account of entrepreneurs in our society since 1776 to present who fought, struggled, faced insurmountable odds, succeeded and who all happen to be WOMEN. Their story is told in a narrative that flows easily and hold's one's interest from one page to the next. This is one great book.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Enlightenment, January 4, 2005
This review is from: Historical Encyclopedia of American Women Entrepreneurs: 1776 to the Present (Hardcover)
The book champions women's achievements but fails to capture the drama of struggle or pivotal moments of a life that leads to the quest of entrepreneurship. However there is nothing like it on the market dealing with this subject from an historical perspective.
