In January, 1936 the first issue of Nevada Magazine, then called Nevada Highways and Parks, was published. Americans had discovered the automobile and the thrill of driving open roads but few knew that Nevada had 2,100 miles of surfaced roads. A new magazine was born to "serve a useful purpose in disseminating facts and news about Nevada's highways and parks, its abundant natural scenic places, and perhaps promote a wider knowledge of its mountains, deserts, and the real western, friendly spirit of its people." Today's Nevada Magazine has full color photos, stories that were once off-limits, and ads but in important ways it hasn't changed. The stories and photos still highlight the state's history, culture, and landscape and, occasionally, highways. This collection of 18 stories represents the kind of colorful features that have appeared in Nevada Magazine over the past sixty years

More About the Author

Richard Moreno is Director of Student Publications and an instructor in the English and Journalism Department at Western Illinois University. He was publisher of Nevada Magazine for 14 years and is the author of eleven books, including "A Short History of Carson City, Nevada," "Roadside History of Nevada," and "Illinois Curiosities." In 2007, he was awarded the Nevada Writer's Hall of Fame's Silver Pen Award, which recognizes emerging or mid-career writers who have shown substantial achievement in their work and a demonstrated connection with Nevada in either their subject matter or by living in the state.
