Knowing my interest in military (especially naval) history, a good friend gave me this collector's set as a gift. The entire package is quite satisfying, from the attractive box to the delightful WWII Morse code flasher and semaphore training dial. I haven't had this much fun since building my first F4U Corsair model airplane! And the illustrated booklet actually makes the subject both fascinating and fun to learn.

Historical Signals and Semaphores comes up under "Books", but it's actually much more than that. The only book is a 60 page full-color booklet. So what else is in this box? Two clever cardboard morse code signallers, with a code chart on the back, that flip from black to white to signal; a bookmark showing the letters and numbers of the International Morse Code; two clever cardboard wheels to read and decode semaphore flags; five color post cards of the history of signalling; a color wall chart of International Nautical Signal Flags; a color wall chart of five phonetic alphabets, showing how they changed from 1913 to the present; and, if you can believe this, two sets of playing cards each depicting a letter in morse code. One pack shows how to signal (transmit) the letter or a message with a particular signal flag; the other shows how to read (receive) the message from the flag position.
Which is to say that this set is thousands of times better than you'd think it would be, and that it makes a great gift for anyone with an interest in history, the military, signaling, information theory, or sailing. Kids and adults alike will enjoy learning, practicing, and sending morse code with their friends. You'll be able to read ship flags, talk like a pilot in phonetic alphabet and, in the fascinating booklet, learn the interesting history of signaling. Two flags up.
